Also within a short drive are Manor House Wildlife Park, Caldey Island, with its cistercian monastery and countless historic castles such as Carew, and Pembroke. It is an ideal location for a perfect family holiday as a getaway or for trying some of the outdoor pursuits and entertainment. Pembrokeshire is famous for its excellent restaurants and pubs. Treetops Ref: OSK

Bursting with charm and elegance, this exceptional, detached property boasts its own private indoor heated swimming pool, decked area and landscaped gardens, all of which enjoy the magnificent views overlooking the Cardigan Bay coastline and Cader Idris mountain range. Its semi-isolated position, accessed by an unmade farm track, means it lies high above the village of Arthog with mountain and sea views and makes it a truly relaxing holiday retreat.
The area is the gateway to the Snowdonia National Park and has plenty of attractions to suit all ages and tastes nearby. Award-winning beaches surround the area with their clean bathing and golden sands. Golf enthusiasts can try their hand at Fairbourne, approximately 2 miles.
Nearby Dolgellau was subject to several gold rushes in the 1860s, when small amounts were found in the estuary, drawing hopeful prospectors from afar. Although some of the quartz veins did yield an amount of the precious metal, the source was short lived. At Bontddu, a few miles west of Dolgellau, gold extracted from that source was used for both the Queen’s wedding ring, and that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Today the town comes alive in mid July during the Sesiwn Fawr, when a series of bands and musical activities take place in pubs and open-air stages. For walkers, Dolgellau makes a good base for a number of wonderful walks, including hikes up the magnificent Cader Idris or more gentle ambles along the Mawddach Estuary. Horse riding and train rides along the coast are available locally; not to be missed are the Creggenan Lakes. Other attractions include King Arthur’s Labyrinth in Corris, near Machynlleth, where an underground boat takes visitors into the spectacular caverns under the Braichgoch mountain, accompanied by light and sound effects. The Corris craft centre offers a delight of local crafts, including jewellery, pottery, turned wood, leather goods and candles amongst others. Other places of interest include the Centre for Alternative Technology, the Talyllyn Railway, the unusual Italianate village of Portmeirion and the lively seaside town of Barmouth with its pretty harbour, great beach and seafood. Snowdonia is just under 1 hour away.

Large living room. Dining room. Modern well-equipped kitchen with breakfast bar. Double bedroom with four-poster bed and en-suite shower room and toilet. Three twin bedrooms. Bathroom with spa bath, shower cubicle and toilet.

Magnificent views over rolling countryside

The Stable (ref 28908) and Little Pentre Barn (ref 28907) occupy a peaceful, rural location about 1 mile from the pretty village of Overton-on-Dee in the heart of border country where Wales meets Cheshire and Shropshire. These two detached holiday cottages are adjacent to the owner’s home and set in their own grounds, with separate private gardens. They share a further 3 acres of land with play area, heated outdoor swimming pool with slide, ‘pirates’ den’ and a small pond, complete with island. Above the swimming pool is a covered terrace which offers magnificent views towards the Shropshire border and is the perfect place in which to relax with a drink on a warm summer’s evening. England lies just beyond the lower boundary of the grounds, where the Shellbrook stream marks the very edge of Wales. There is ample parking and bike storage on site. The Stable and Little Pentre Barn offer something for everyone, making this a great base. Relax in the gardens or explore the grounds (children must be supervised at all times); a few minutes’ walk across the fields leads to the banks of the River Dee. Enjoy scenic walks and cycle rides right from the door or visit the local meres. Picturesque Llangollen, the Roman city of Chester and medieval Shrewsbury are just a short drive. There are several NT properties close by. At Chirk, 8 miles, admire the medieval fortress of Chirk Castle, often with activities for young children, and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which carries the canal. Walk across this and explore a couple of long canal tunnels nearby. Erddig, a stately home surrounded by lovely gardens, is 7 miles and brims with antiques. Further afield is Powis Castle, 28 miles, set in a stunning location with one of the best landscaped gardens in the country. Visit Hawkstone Follies, 23 miles, a group of rather odd grottos, monuments, underground passages and ornate buildings set on a magnificent escarpment, or Park Hall, 11 miles, an award winning outdoor farm, good for young children. Llangollen is 15 miles with its steam railway giving lovely views of the mountains. Oswestry, 12 miles, has a large bronze age castle mound, very interesting shops, old buildings and a market. Ellesmere, 4 miles, has a swing park, boat hire and excellent lakeside tea shop/restaurant. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

All on ground floor: Living room/dining area with French doors and tiled floor. Kitchen. 1 double bedroom. Wet room with toilet.

Multi-fuel burner in living room (initial fuel included). NB: 5 steps in garden. Drop from decked area.

Both properties: Electric heaters and electricity by coin meter. Bed linen and towels included. Travel cot. High chair. Freeview TV. DVD. Stereo/CD. Microwave. Electric cooker. Shared laundry room with washing machine. Dishwasher. Shared freezer (in shared utility room). Lawned garden with decked area and furniture. Barbecue. Shared 2-acre natural grounds. Parking (2 cars). Cycle store. Barbecue. Shared outdoor heated swimming pool (8m x 4m, depth 1m to 2m), open July-August. No smoking. NB: Pond in grounds 150 yards.
