Carmarthenshire has natural scenic beauty, glorious long beaches, a fascinating history and is also home to the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, which could state its claim to be the 'Garden of Wales'. In fact this region has a blend of both great coastal and countryside locations that makes it the ideal place for a self-catering cottage holiday in wales.

The National Botanic Gardens of Wales has the largest single-span glasshouse in the world with an unrivalled collection of plants from across the world. If you're into gardening a trip to Aberglasney should also be on your agenda, here you can see perfectly restored 15th century gardens.

History plays a large part in the story of the region, so it almost goes without saying that ancient attractions are some of the biggest draws, for instance Carreg Cennen Castle which can be traced back to the 13th century. This romantic ruin offers a lovely walk up to its hillside location and amazing views. For more historical interest you could get along to the National Trust property at Dinefwr Castle and Park with its beautiful 12th century castle situated amongst a tranquil 800-acre park with wild deer and stunning flora and fauna.

For some gentle exercise visit the Millennium Coast Path, its 12 mile cycle way is perfect for family days out on the bike, with Pembrey Country Park at one end and the National Wetlands Centre at the other. Great views of the Burry estuary!

For more strenuous activity try walking Llyn Y Fan Fac, in the Black Mountains on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

A great way to see the region is to hop onto the Heart of Wales Railway, which travels a route between Swansea and Shrewsbury. These steam locomotives travel through some of the most stunning scenery in Britain.

The Dylan Thomas Boathouse in Laugharne; the author's very own holiday cottage in Carmarthenshire offers incredible views over the Tâf Estuary, so it's not hard to see how Thomas could find so much inspiration from the area.

These purpose-built holiday cottages (refs 24574, 27255 and 27257) have been constructed or converted from the original farmhouse buildings and an old Welsh longhouse. Welsh craftsmanship at its best - only the finest local tradesmen and materials have been used for the conversion of these buildings. They are situated in an elevated position on the edge of Broadlay near Ferryside on the old pilgrim road to St David’s Cathedral a half mile from the Three Rivers Hotel and Spa. Guests are welcome to use all the facilities at the hotel such as the swimming pool. There is generous amenity space and a country adventure play area for small accompanied children. The complex is on the local bus route which connects to Carmarthen via the hotel and Ferryside railway station. In the opposite direction, Kidwelly and Swansea are en route. Ferryside is uncommercialised, peaceful and quiet; the ideal getaway for a perfect weekend (or longer) break. It is also, due to its proximity to Carmarthen, Llanelli and other centres, an ideal corporate meeting place. Kidwelly, with its Norman castle, industrial heritage museum, Pembrey Country Park and Motorsport Centre, within approximately 10 minutes’ travelling time.
