The Cardigan/Ceredigion region is probably best known for its superb beaches and iconic harbour ports which make this stretch of coastline such a great place for a cottage holiday in Wales. It's where Dylan Thomas was inspired to write some of his best work and with the Cambrian Mountains as the back drop you can relax and enjoy a region full of wildlife and natural beauty.

The region's coastline offers mile after mile of golden sandy beaches, many of which have been awarded the coveted 'Blue Flag' award. Discover hidden coves and smugglers caves, old fishing harbours and magnificent cliffs where you can take the coastal path which extends some 60 miles.

There are two special areas of conservation here and a rich diversity of marine wildlife including Bottle Nosed dolphins, seals and sea birds. It's easy to hop aboard one of the many boat trips that operate from New Quay and Cardigan to fully appreciate this designated 'Marine Heritage Coast'.

Inland a great plateau rises to form the largest part of the Cambrian Mountains with Pumlumon Fawr its highest peak at 752m (2,468 feet). This large and remote plateau is broken up by steep valleys which include some of the most beautiful mountain passes in Wales.

Further explorations of local wildlife can be found at the Welsh Wildlife Centre. This great visitor centre stands on the Telfi Marshes Nature Reserve and, thanks to its glass fronted design and elevated position, offers incredible views of the surrounding area and a variety of wildlife.

Some visitor attractions and activities of interest include the National Wool Museum were you can learn all about the region's sheep farming heritage, or if you're feeling adventurous try the Cardigan Bay Watersports and Sea School. Pentre Bach is the home of the well known Welsh children’s character ’Sali Mali’ and her friends, and this is where the TV series and books are based. Each of the 3 holiday cottages is themed and is the ’home’ of one of the characters from the stories. The name ’Pentre Bach’ means ’little village’ and has been created on the owner’s farm. This magical setting is a big hit with families with children, each cottage is decorated and furnished in keeping with the characters. W42763 is ’The Butterfly Hotel’ with pink painted walls and butterfly stencils. W42765 has a football theme and W42764 has unusual bric-a-brac and novelties. There is a gift shop on site (with wi-fi available), you can book a tea party for the children and order cakes or seasonal home grown produce can be delivered to your front door. The cottages (refs W42763, W42764 and W42765) have been awarded 4 stars by the Welsh Tourist Board since opening in 2005 and they may be booked individually or together. The area itself has lots to offer, including fantastic walks around the nearby Cambrian Mountains and Cors Caron Nature Reserve, which offer breathtaking views across the magnificent scenery, where buzzards and red kites soar high. The area is considered as a natural playground for ramblers, mountain bikers and climbers alike, with lots of Iron Age settlements dotted around the county. Gwbert-on-Sea is a small, quiet hamlet on the eastern shore of the mouth of the Teifi Estuary, just a couple of miles outside Cardigan. The settlement takes its name from a wandering saint. St Gwbert is said to have landed here and sheltered in a cave. The shoreline is marked by rugged cliffs and small shingle bays, with large stretches of sandbank exposed at low tide, and the area gives superb views over a diverse and scenic landscape. The ancient oak woodland of the Teifi Valley, the tidal marshes of the estuary, and the boundary of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park can all be appreciated from here. The 18-hole golf course, the home of Cardigan Golf Club, also offers fine views of the estuary and sea, and from the headland you can look across to Cardigan Island. The mud and sand flats of the estuary attracts a great variety of birds. In the autumn such waders as the redshank, oystercatcher and curlew can be seen feeding here, along with several species of migrating duck. The headland of Craig y Gwbert is the site of an Iron Age Fort. Pieces of pottery have also been found near Gwbert, and are now on display in Cardigan museum. Tregaron feels almost untouched by the 21st century and is a bastion of the Welsh language and culture. The river running through the town centre leads to Cors Caron, a national nature reserve of peat bog which is one of the most impressive wildlife areas in Wales; home to rare marsh grasses, black adders, buzzards and even the occasional red kite.
