Local Gems

York is the favourite destination for visitors to "God's own county" but you can see a similar eclectic mixture of historic buildings in the attractive market towns of Beverley, Ripon and Richmond. Yorkshire has some glorious scenery which you can experience in many places throughout the county, not only in famous tourist bases. Osmotherley nestling beneath the North Yorks Moors or Reeth, surrounded by hills,
are great walking bases and each village has well-stocked shops.
If you like beer, the Georgian market town of Masham will interest you. It's home to two breweries: Theakston and Black Sheep. Afterwards you might take your children to Forbidden Corner: a fun park of puzzles and illusion. Do try Yorkshire blue cheese on holiday. This traditional variety once died out but was, thankfully, re-introduced by Shepherds Purse Cheeses in the 1990s. They make it by hand on the family farm near Thirsk.
