Local Gems
Although the southern counties of England have some world-famous sights and seaside resorts, they still reward the visitor who looks a bit deeper. There's a fascinating agricultural and military heritage and some wonderful lesser-known open spaces. It's still possible to find traditional crafts in the region: near Maidstone you'll find the last working coal-fired Oast house in Britain and hop-picking by hand. There are still a few charcoal burners too in the High Weald.
This is one of the world's most ancient crafts and in Kent the techniques have hardly changed since pre-Roman times.
Although the Cinque Ports are famous for their military heritage, The Royal Military Canal in the mysterious Romney Marsh is a fascinating local treasure. Built to resist Napoleonic invasion, you can still wander along its banks. Meanwhile, walkers looking for classic South Downs views might enjoy Chyngton Farm or Frog Firle Farm as well as the better known Sussex beauty spots.
