Local Gems

If you head straight through southern Scotland, northwards, you'll have missed some real gems. Dramatic Galloway Forest, for example, has high peaks and numerous hiking trails whilst the gentle, uncrowded Ayrshire coast offers top-notch golf links with three-day passes for visitors. Moving east to the Borders, another hidden treasure is Melrose dominated by a ruined Cistercian abbey. In central Scotland, Highland Perthshire is breathtakingly
beautiful.
Amongst its wooded mountains is Rannoch Moor, one of the remotest parts of the UK, full of lochs and heather-clad hills. The Highlands and Islands are similarly exhilarating far from famous tourist haunts. Many people drive through Mull, for example, onto popular Iona but Mull itself is a good holiday island with wild scenery and a pretty fishing port for its capital: Tobermory. Ullapool on the Highlands' west coast is a lively port and Gairloch Bay, not far away, hosts seals, dolphins and sometimes whales.
