Local Gems
The ever-popular rugged Peak District in Derbyshire has some fascinating hidden attractions worth searching out.
Castleton village, 10 miles from Buxton, is surrounded by limestone hills and is an ideal starting point for walkers. It has a good pub there too (listed in the gems below). For a different landscape, the Longshaw Estate in the East is a less crowded place to go. Moorlands and woodlands stretch in all
directions from the visitor centre (a former hunting lodge).
Many people like to take in the spa town at Buxton and a delightful town-centre attraction, easy to miss, is the free water fountain, fed by St Ann's Well. Traditional crafts are still practised locally. The Peak Park Ranger for Hayfield, Kevin Thomson, is an expert in hedge laying and dry stone walling. Currently he's planning a new stepped footpath through ancient woodland towards the Kinder plateau, all to be laid by hand.
