If you can tear yourself away from Windermere and Ullswater (yes, we think they're fabulous too), you'll find wonderful scenery and lots to do in lesser known parts of this varied region.
Coniston Water is a smaller lake offering gentle wooded walks round its shores with wooden launches stopping at three piers on the way. Heading west, you'll come to the Cumbrian coast and the best way to see it is from a train on the
heritage narrow-gauge Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway.
Georgian Whitehaven is another place fewer people know about; it has a fascinating museum tracing its history. Just south of the town are the dramatic cliffs of Bees Head offering blustery coastal rambles. The region's military heritage is evident at Lancaster Castle on the river Lune which still has some of its original walls and battlements. The castle dominates the characterful Georgian town.
