Here in the wild landscapes of the north eastern counties, there are world-famous monuments but look out, too, for the lesser-known attractions that also give a flavour of the region's character. To experience the North East's biodiversity, take a trip to the Farne Islands Nature Reserve by boat from the resort of Seahouses. It's less visited than nearby Holy Island.
Berwick-upon-Tweed on the Scottish border
has plenty of evidence of its former frontier-town status. The Elizabethan ramparts are in near-perfect condition and the town's barracks were designed by Hawksmoor. Travelling south, you'll enjoy viewing the wild Chillingham cattle in their reserve. Only around 70 remain of this unique breed and this is the nearest thing you'll get to a wild game safari in England. Yarm, in County Durham, gives you a sense of how civilised shopping was two generations ago. It's a gem of a small town full of independent shops.
