South East secrets to whet your appetite…

You might be thinking of walking in King Arthur’s footsteps at Tintagel, but not many people realise there’s an even older mystery hidden just a few miles north on the road to Boscastle. Look out for a quiet gorge at Bossiney that will take you on an enchanted walk to find prehistoric labyrinth rock carvings.

The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are popular, inspirational destinations for nature lovers. But if it’s peace and tranquillity you like in a garden, then head further from the madding crowd. At Trebah, near Falmouth you’ll find 25 acres of sub-tropical paradise. Or at Trelissick Garden, near Truro, there are great views out to Falmouth Harbour.

The Jamaica Inn is Bodmin Moor’s most famously haunted pit stop – immortalised by Daphne Du Marier’s novel of the same name. But there’s an even weirder treat just next door. In Potter’s Museum of Curiosity you’ll find the strange collection of Victorian taxidermist and naturalist Walter Potter.

The Falmouth National Maritime Museum boasts exhibits covering everything from the county's fishing heritage to surfing in the Atlantic breakers. And for wine lovers, a trip to Camel Valley is a must. For over twenty years, wine has been produced from the grapes grown next to the Camel River.

Newquay is spoilt for beaches, but the fine golden sand and west facing outlook make Fistral one of the most popular for surfing.
Rock and Daymer Bay near Padstow are backed by sand dunes beside the beautiful Camel Estuary… just watch out for tidal currents!
Lantic Bay, between Fowey and Polperro is an idyllic, isolated cove with amazing views towards Pen carrow Head.
For safe, family fun on long golden sands, head to either Carbis or Whitesand Bay near St Ives.
For a huge expanse of sand, great rock pools and cliff walks, Crooklets beach near Bude could be just what you’re looking for.
