Northumberland secrets to whet your appetite…

Hadrian's Wall is one of the most iconic of Northumberland's attractions, which is probably why it's one of the UK's most popular tourist destinations. Visitors can explore the remains of the 80 miles of fortified stone that spans the Northumberland moorland and marvel at the incredible display of Roman craftsmanship and engineering on display. Due to the unrivalled scenery on offer, the 30 mile central stretch of the wall seems to be the most popular. However, there is also historic beauty to be found on the Northumberland coast, in particular at Dunstanburgh castle - the Duke of Lancaster's magnificent holiday cottage!

At one time, Dunstanburgh was one of the largest castles in the north of England. Now a shadow of its former self, it still attracts a large selection of visitors to Northumberland thanks to its dramatic location on the beautiful coastline - a view that inspired Turner to return with his paintbrush several times over the years. But if you prefer your medieval structures to be a little more complete, then the castle at Alnwick is definitely worth a visit.

Although Alnwick Castle has been relatively unchanged over the years, the grounds have seen dramatic renovation in recent times. Now a major tourist attraction, Alnwick Gardens hosts the UK's largest, and most lavish, water feature surrounded by acres of opulent greenery. Wizards in your party will also be delighted to get a view of the castle, as it doubled for the exterior of Hogwarts in several of the Harry Potter films.

And after all that exploring, you're probably ready for refreshment. There are a range of excellent restaurants in Northumberland, offering the best local produce. But with the sheer range of great food and drink on offer you may choose to take some back to your holiday cottage to prepare yourself. The Northumberland Cheese Company in Blagdon make a range of delicious, award-winning cheeses, which they supply to many local retailers. And if you want something to wash it down with then the Northumberland Brewery in Bedlington brews many real ales, offers visitor tours and has an onsite bar. Just make sure you have transportation to your holiday cottage prepared before you visit.

Castles and Cathedrals in Northumberland

  • Bamburgh Castle with long battlements and a vast beamed King's Hall, sits on a crag above a magnificent beach. Well worth a day's exploration.
  • We love Alnwick Castle too, particularly its remarkable Poison Garden. Look, don't touch because it contains some of the world's deadliest plants!
  • Durham Cathedral broods over the town and with so many memorials there, makes for a sombre mood
  • Chillingham Castle is another massive fortress and restored in the 1930s, is now a fascinating tour.
  • Though Warkworth Castle is just a ruin, it's important as the historic power base of the Earls of Northumberland in medieval times.
