This is a great base; the seaside town of Ayr is a short drive and Glasgow can be reached in less than an hour. Ayr is the largest of the Clyde Coast holiday towns and looks out on the glorious panorama of the Firth, with the majestic peaks of Arran in the foreground and the Mull of Kintyre in the background. Ayr racecourse is home to the Scottish Grand National and hosts up to thirty race meetings a year. Ayrshire is home to some of the finest golf courses in Scotland, from testing championship links courses to scenic parks courses. Turnberry and Royal Troon are the most known golf courses in Ayrshire hosting the Open and Seniors Open. Old Prestwick is another world renowned links course as the first ever Open was played there when the tournament began in 1860. There are many other fine links courses in Ayrshire. Ayrshire is steeped in history with links to William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Robert Burns. The beautiful Ayrshire countryside provided the inspiration for some of the finest verses of Robert Burns and his birthplace at Alloway now houses a museum dedicated to the bard. There are over forty castles throughout the country, some of which are open to the public. The finest without a doubt is Culzean, the jewel in the crown. Dumfries House is a georgian gem. Nestling within 2,000 acres of scenic Ayrshire countryside in south west Scotland, this beautiful Palladian mansion house has been described as an 18th century time capsule, with many of its principal rooms extremely well preserved and some of there exquisite contents virtually unchanged for nearly 250 years. The house remained unseen by the public since it was built until it opened its doors as a visitor attraction in June 2008. The four islands Ailsa Craig, Arran, Cumbrae, and the Holy Isle, are only a short distance off the Ayrshire coast. The Isle of Arran has the best of what the rest of Scotland has to offer. A beautiful coastline with pretty villages complemented by a rugged and mountainous interior in the north and green rolling hills and woodland in the south. Ailsa Craig is now a bird sanctuary with seasonal daily boat trips. Cumbrae is one of the smallest islands on the Firth of Clyde and is just a 10 minute ferry crossing from Largs. It’s a perfect destination for a day out. The Island boasts deserted beaches, sandy coves, a flat landscape, and the main town of Millport has lots to entertain the family. Cumbrae is a paradise for cyclists and the traditional way to explore is a hop on a bike and experience the very best of the island. Holy Isle has an ancient spiritual heritage stretching back to the 6th Century. Locally landed seafood and Plockton brewed ale can be enjoyed all year round in several nearby inns and restaurants.
There are many fine low level and coastal walks in and around the village where otters and birdlife can be spotted. For the more active, sailing, kayaking, mountain biking, fishing and hill walking are particularly popular with Torridon and Kintail only a short journey away.
Plockton is an area with interests for everyone. Visitors can enjoy the romantic Eilean Donan Castle, the Lochalsh Woodland Garden at Balmacara maintained by the National Trust, or the remote coastal settlement of Applecross reached by a memorable journey over the highest road in Scotland. At nearby Kyle of Lochalsh is the bridge over to the beautiful Isle of Skye which boasts spectacular mountain, cliff and seascapes and some unique geological formations. From there, take a boat trip to spot seals, dolphins or whales or to visit the elusive and magical Loch Coruisk in the heart of the Cuillin mountains.
