The Old Coach House Ref: CC537034
The lovely cottage is a former coach house and laundry to the adjoining 18 century Dunragit House and estate. At one time the house belonged to John Charles Cuninghame, 17th Laird of Craigends in Renfrewshire and in 1919 the estate came up for sale and the following is an extract from the London Times, December 6, 1919 "...... the sporting, residential and agricultural estate of Dunragit, in the county of Wigtown, extending to an area of about 7438 acres, and including DUNRAGIT HOUSE and policies, Factor’s house, estate cottages, 20 valuable farms, capital grouse and salmon and sea trout fishing in the river Luce for a distance of 41 miles. DUNRAGIT HOUSE, situated in well timbered policies, over-drawing room. library, billiard room, 12 principal bed and dressing rooms, 11 servants bed rooms, four bathrooms, with attics and ample domestic offices’. The name Dunragit, means the fort of Rheged one of the ancient kingdoms of Britain and the area is steeped in history from standing stones to ancient fortresses and strongholds.

This holiday property is situated in a stunning, private, elevated position looking over Loch Awe and the ruins of Finchairn Castle. It has a square enclosed courtyard to the back of the property and a large garden to the front which is bordered by a dry stone wall with far reaching views across the loch. This detached, multi-storey farmhouse is located on Ederline Estate, a family-owned working hill farm, covering around 13000 acres of stunning scenery. The estate is made up of woodland, far reaching moors, 22 lochs; all with wild brown trout which guests are welcome to fish with a fly (£10 per day), and on Loch Ederline guests can fish for pike, perch and roach. Wildlife in the area is legendary, with red and roe deer, pine martens, foxes and red squirrels often seen. The famous Scottish wildcat and otter are also common but not seen as regularly. Golden eagle, osprey, peregrines, black and red throated divers and many other rare species all nest on the estate. The area is rich in history and archaeological sites, with the main concentration in the Kilmartin Glen only a short distance away. On the estate itself there are two ancient chapels and a castle to be explored. Activities include kayaking (£10 per half day, £15 per full day), local pony trekking, and in season, stalking can be arranged. The numerous forest trails and Crinan Canal tow paths are ideal for walking and cycling. Short ferry crossings to Islay, Gigha, Mull and Arran are easily made, or the Kintyre Peninsula offers white sandy beaches and some of the best golf courses in Scotland. There are an abundance of good restaurants in easy motoring distance of Ederline Estate which cater for all tastes with some excellent sea food. Shop and pub 5 miles.

A perfect base for a peaceful country holiday, the cottages of Abbey Court, the individual character of the Coach House properties and the spacious apartments located within Whitmuir Hall itself, offer a range of accommodation for all tastes, seasons and party sizes. There are 32 acres of private grounds consisting of woodland and lawns, and a recreation building containing a heated indoor swimming pool (access by arrangement).
Recreational possibilities include: 21 golf courses included in the Freedom of the Fairways Passport; walking, whether gently through woods and alongside rivers and towns, or on the more challenging Southern Upland and St Cuthbert’s Ways; cycling for all abilities on quiet local roads, on the many great cycle routes nearby or try some downhill trails at Glentress Forest, Peebles (cycle store available at the properties); or have fun on their Go Ape tree top adventure course; fishing for salmon and trout on the River Tweed and its tributaries, or on stocked lochs for trout and coarse fish. Historic houses, abbeys and castles including Melrose Abbey (burial place of the the heart of Robert the Bruce); Mary Queen of Scots’ house in Jedburgh; Traquair, the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, and the Roman camp of Trimontium.
