The Scottish Borders consist of 1,800 square miles of unspoilt and tranquil rolling countryside that stretches south of Edinburgh and the Lothians to the English border in Scotland's south east corner. To the east is the magnificent Berwick coastline and to the west is Dumfries and Galloway.

This is an area where visitors can enjoy the very best outdoor activities; learn about the fascinating history and culture of the area by visiting its many historical and cultural sites of interest and simply soak up its untouched and natural beauty.

The Berwickshire coast is perfect for stunning cliff-top walks and the Berwickshire Coastal Path runs from Eyemouth to St. Abbs affording great sea views. This coastline has some very dramatic cliffs and charismatic fishing villages.

St. Abbs is popular with holidaymakers who come here to walk and see the wonderful marine and bird life; the waters in this area provide the perfect conditions for a diverse range of sea life including grey seals, dolphins, whales and seabirds. The St. Abbs Head Nature Reserve is well known for the conservation work it does to maintain the pristine condition of this stretch of coastline.

The River Tweed and Tweed Valley is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with a host of wonderful walking routes and off-road mountain bike trail and includes the 7 stanes mountain bike centre. Keen anglers will of course also know that this area is famous for the quality of its salmon fishing rivers.

The regions border towns include Galashiels, known for its textiles and 19th century architecture, Peebles situated on the River Tweed, a handsome and sophisticated little town with parkland and river side-walks, and Selkirk which has great views of St. Mary's Loch.

Also of interest is Kelso, much favoured by Sir Walter Scott, for its wonderful architecture and cultural past. Close by Scotland's largest inhabited house, Floors Castle, occupies acres of parkland which overlooks the River Tweed. The castle itself houses collections of paintings, furniture and porcelain.

At Melrose, Abbotsford, the former residency of Sir Walter Scott, remains one of the most famous houses in the world. Here there is a visitor centre and family play trail for the children – well worth a visit.

This region has not always been as peaceful as it is today; historically it's been the focal point for many cross border conflicts which can be evidenced by the large number of castles and grand stately homes that can be found throughout the area; it also provides some fascinating days out for visitors!

This 19th century house is a peaceful haven, set in the lush walled Harmony Garden. Harmony was given its name by the Melrose joiner who built it, after the Jamaican pimento plantation where he made his fortune. This detached holiday house has been carefully furnished to combine period detail with all the comforts. Gathering together the whole family in Harmony’s opulent drawing room should be a step back in time without having to leave contemporary convenience behind. Harmony Garden is a tranquil walled garden comprising lawns, herbaceous and mixed borders, vegetable and fruit, and a rich display of spring bulbs. The garden’s texture, fragrance and colour change throughout the year making it a place to return to again and again. A trip to Melrose isn’t complete without a wander round the Abbey. Although portions of the 12th century structure survive, the magnificent rose-stone building dates from the 1385 rebuilding. Look out for the chapter house, where Robert the Bruce’s heart is said to be buried, or the statue of Scottish medieval wizard, Michael Scott. Visit nearby rustic Priorwood Garden to learn about the craft of dried flower work; pick your own blooms to order and take home. Walk part of the St Cuthbert’s Way, following in the footsteps of the eponymous saint. The whole route takes four days and leads across the mudflats to Lindisfarne. The Melrose to St Boswell’s section is 7½ miles each way. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Numerous recreational facilities are provided for visitors – without even having to leave the grounds – and which cater for a whole range of interests and a variety of tastes. In the drawing room a selection of games, toys and books make a enjoyable evening spent together as a family. The more sports-orientated are able to while away many happy hours playing snooker and badminton, or enjoying the more sedate game of croquet, whilst trout and coarse fishing are also available on-site at cost. A pub to frequent in the evenings lies just 1½ miles away.
The village of Yetholm is made up of two distinct parts – Kirk Yetholm and Town Yetholm, which lie just ¼ mile apart. Situated on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, they mark the end of the Pennine Way footpath, as well as the second leg of St Cuthbert’s Way (a 60-mile walk ending at Holy Island in Northumberland). Six miles to the north is Kelso, where surviving ruins belie the fact that Kelso Abbey was once the richest and most powerful in southern Scotland, and took eighty years to build. Kelso lies at the confluence of the River Tweed and River Teviot, a renowned spot for salmon fishing, and a short walk leads to Floors Castle, a huge castellated mansion overlooking the Tweed, which is open for visiting (April to Oct).
