Even without the current, it still makes a lovely sized pool in which children can swim and have fun.
This is an ideal location to explore one of Scotland’s most picturesque areas with excellent outdoor activities to be enjoyed including walking, cycling, golf, fishing, pony trekking and water sports nearby, as well the Rob Roy Way and Cycle Track 7, which both pass through Gartmore. Visit the Trossachs Discovery Centre to learn more about this exciting area, or a little further afield, why not enjoy a cruise on the stunning Loch Lomond. Stirling - with its ancient castle - is also easily accessible for the day and well worth a trip.
The surrounding district is steeped in history and there are many characters in Scottish history who have had vast amounts written about them, but few as famous as Rob Roy Macgregor, William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots, all of whom had a part to play in the history of this area. Shop 1⅓ miles.

Loch Lomond, backed by the wooded slopes of Ben Lomond, is the setting for this attractively furnished timber holiday lodge set within Scotland’s first National Park. Located in a private park of 38 properties, it has direct access to the shoreline jetty (boat launching, booked through the hotel). Pleasure cruises are available from the nearby village of Balmaha. There are plenty of challenges for walkers in the area; the 92 mile West Highland Way passes alongside the loch, and runs from Milngavie to Fort William, while the route up Ben Lomond offers scope to ’Munro Baggers’. Within easy driving reach are Stirling, Inverary Castle, Loch Lomond shores and the lovely Trossachs area. The loch’s surroundings have easy walking and the water near the shore offers swimming in warm weather. Further afield, Balloch Castle Country Park covers 200 acres with nature trails, guided walks and views of the loch and the castle, built in 1808 and including a visitor’s centre. There is no shop on the site but a seasonal one is 3 miles away, and Drymen, 11 miles, has a range of small shops. Rowardennan Hotel/pub, 200 yards, offers a warm welcome and good food around the year.

Rhoda’s Cottage is a charming semi detached property located in the small village of Strachur, which lies on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne - famous throughout the United Kingdom for the quality of its sea food. Strachur House itself, a fine Adams style mansion, was built by General John Campbell in the 1780s. From 1957 the house was home to the illustrious Scot, Sir John Fitzroy MacLean, the soldier, diplomat and adventurer, who was said to have been the model for Ian Fleming’s hero, James Bond. The Maclean family still live in the main house. The local village shop, cafe, Inn with bar and restaurant, petrol station, village hall and tennis courts are all within easy walking distance from the cottage.
