Find cottages in PortreeVisit Portree

Portree is the largest town on Isle of Skye and provides the perfect base, either in the town itself or in the surrounding area, for your cottage holiday on the Isle of Skye. This wonderful island has a rich Gaelic heritage and great natural beauty, which has attracted holidaymakers for decades.

This charming town is surrounded by lush green hills and fringed by cliffs, the brightly painted houses that line Portree harbour are a sight to behold. This harbour is a hive of activity where fishing boats and pleasure cruises bob side by side in a tranquil setting.

A walk through the town will take visitors past Portree's most prominent landmark, the Mercat Cross and war memorial on Somerled Square. Another popular landmark in the town is the Royal Hotel, an important piece of history not only for its architecture, but also because it was once the site of MacNabs Inn, where in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie last met Flora MacDonald.

For those interested in the history and heritage of Portree and the Isle of Skye, the award winning Aros Centre is the cultural hub of the town. Interactive exhibits, theatre performances, concerts and films all combine to form an incredible exhibition dedicated to the area's culture.

Portree is extremely picturesque and those who enjoy outdoor activities can indulge in their favourite pursuits. Sailing and fishing are both popular pastimes here; boat rental is available and pleasure cruises depart from the harbour. For those who enjoy walking or cycling, there is an abundance of trails around the town and pony treks are also offered.

Book one of the many cottages in Portree and enjoy a holiday in a Scottish town unspoilt by time.

Diubaig House Ref: S12

With splendid views of the Trotternish Hills and Loch Greshornish, in the unspoilt north of Skye, this 5 star, detached stone cottage is a peaceful, secluded and comfortable retreat on one of the island’s most picturesque peninsulas. Décor and furnishings are to a very high standard and include the owner’s distinguished collection of Scottish paintings; the kitchen has local stoneware, cast-iron casseroles and an induction hob. Every room looks down to the Loch, where in summer the dawn breaks early and the moon throws a silver path across the water. Skye is the ramblers’ paradise where the Cuillin Mountains can be tackled by climbers or easy walks taken along cliffs and foreshore. The nearby Trotternish peninsula offers some unusual rock formations, where a combination of volcanic basalt and softer sandstone and limestone has caused spectacular landslips and sheer cliffs.
The island, renowned for its excellent seafood and wonderful restaurants, has something to suit everyone. Visit Dunvegan Castle, Neist Point Lighthouse and the old fishing village at Stein. The ‘Blackhouse’ Museum at Duntulm shows how islanders lived in thatched stone houses; the Aros Centre in Portree shows how the sea eagle has been reintroduced on Skye. Ferry trips can be made to the Outer Hebrides or a boat trip into the Cuillins. Tour the island by car or take an easy walk around the 4-acre garden and to the secret shores of Loch Diabaig or just walk out of the back door for 10 minutes for a glorious view of the Ascrib islands.
