The Highlands region consists of distinctive sub-regions each with their own characteristics and unique charms, extending from Fort William and Lochaber in the south to the Northern Highlands.

Fort William is considered by many as the 'outdoor capital' of Scotland, this bustling town situated on the shores of Loch Linnhe has lots of places to eat and drink, interesting shops and is a great base for a wide selection of outdoor activities. The town is handy for trips into the dramatic and brooding Glen Coe and is the 'road to the Isles' which takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. The town is also right next to the world famous Ben Nevis (and its glen), Scotland's highest mountain.

To the north is the iconic Loch Ness, some 23 miles long and 700 feet deep; in fact deep enough for a monster. Take a cruise to visit Urquhart Castle a once famous Great Glen fortress; there's a visitor centre both here and on shore at Drumnadrochit.

'The city of the Highlands' Inverness is today a modern thriving city on the banks of the River Ness. It has a rich historical and cultural history with plenty of attractions including a great castle. Close by is Fort George a well preserved 18th century fortification built in the terrible aftermath of the Battle of Culloden, facing out over the Moray Firth.

To the east are the Black Isle and the Moray Firth, dotted with traditional fishing villages, hidden bays and golden sandy beaches. It's a renowned dolphin watching area where you can see them quite close up from the shore if you're lucky.

Further north still is the awe inspiring Northern Highlands, with plenty of castles and ancient monuments, massive lochs, atmospheric mountains and glens and magnificent coastlines that stretch for miles. This is a sparsely populated region where you can really get away from everyday life and connect with nature.

Cairns Cottage is a traditional stone cottage situated on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Port Henderson, a crofting community in the heart of Wester Ross. Built over two storeys, it is ideal for couples and small families. Its been fully renovated and modernised to offer all the benefits of central heating and insulation to make it feel warm and welcoming. The main lounge is bright and welcoming, with cottage-style furniture. The kitchen/dining room is well equipped with integral units and plenty of space for dining. Steep cottage stairs lead up to the first floor. The two double bedrooms are attractively presented, with good use of space for cupboards and storage.

The gardens are a real delight. Mainly laid to lawn and bounded by a traditional dry stone wall, they enjoy superb views across the field to the sea and the Isle of Skye beyond. There is also a small patio area with picnic table and chairs; a wonderful spot to sit and admire the views.

Cairns Cottage is situated on a small country lane that follows the contours of the coastline, with small bays, little fishing harbours, sweeping sands and stunning scenery. It finishes at Redpoint Bay, a renowned beauty spot, with a wide sandy beach.

A perfect base for touring the Highlands and west coast of Scotland

Set on the hillside above the road to Skye and the Outer Hebrides, these holiday lodges (four on site), (refs 29581 and 29582) located on the owners’ small working farm, have a number of sheep, Shetland ponies, ducks, geese, chickens and peacocks, and make a perfect base for touring the Highlands and west coast of Scotland. The area is a “Baggers” paradise with over 60 Munros easily reached. Both the Great Glen Way and the Caledonian Canal offer mountain biking and leisurely walks, whilst other outdoor pursuits nearby include golf, fishing and a variety of watersports. Nevis Range is home to the World Champion Mountain Bike Track plus superb skiing in the winter. The area is renowned for its breath-taking scenery, and wildlife is in abundance with golden eagles, deer, pine martens and otters often spotted. There are many historic castles including Urqhuart Castle and Eilean Donan Castle to visit, or a choice of museums, distilleries, beautiful gardens and unspoilt beaches to explore.
