Find cottages in ThursoVisit Thurso

Thurso is the most northerly town on the Scottish mainland and provides a real holiday adventure away from the crowds amongst the unspoilt natural beauty of Scotland's northern most Highland region; it's just ideal for exploring the scenic north and east coasts and remote Caithness.

The town itself has many traditional independent shops as well as supermarkets for all your needs. There are also plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants, so if you feel like a break from cooking, you can easily eat out.

Caithness Horizons is a modern museum that is well worth visiting. It is located in the old Town Hall and you can see many permanent exhibits telling the story of Caithness, as well as a changing programme of exhibitions. There is also a gift shop selling local crafts and a cafe that is used for small exhibitions in the centre.

Thurso is a major centre for surfing that come all year round. Surfing championships and kayak surfing championships are held here which attract sportsmen and women from all over the world.

From the town's seafront, the remains of Thurso Castle can be seen, but as this was partly demolished following a fire in 1952 there is not much to see. The seafront is extremely picturesque, with views over the Pentland Firth to Hoy.

The Castle, and particularly the Gardens of Mey, about fifteen miles east of Thurso, are well worth visiting. These were renovated by the Queen Mother, who owned them between 1952 and 1996, and are open to the public from May to September.
