Overlooking the beautiful Dornoch Firth lays the ancient Royal Burgh of Tain. With the sea on one side and the mountains behind, this Highland town is perfect for exploring both the east coast and the open, empty and beautiful north Highland countryside.

Tain is a thriving ancient town and is the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, renowned for its striking architecture with many of its building designed by the celebrated Maitland family of architects. In town there are all the facilities you'll need during your cottage holiday with plenty of shops and restaurants serving up good local produce.

Two large events in the Tain diary is the week long gala in May / June, including a country show and Red Arrows display, together with the Tain Highland Gathering in August which attracts worldwide visitors to these traditional Highland Games.

Close by there are white sandy beaches and magnificent surrounding countryside, with endless walks for all abilities and of course the town's Tom Morris designed golf course, overlooking the Firth, is another opportunity to spoil a good walk!

For local arts and crafts, Scotland's largest ceramic manufactures are at the Tain Pottery using traditional craft techniques which can be viewed in their showrooms and shop. In addition the Glasstorm studios and shop, gives you the opportunity to try your hand at this skilful craft.

A visit to the Highlands would not be complete without a trip to the world famous Glenmorangie Distillery half a mile from Tain. Here you can take stroll to the Tarlogie Springs, the source of this fine whisky, and take a personal tour around the distillery followed by the visitors centre and finally the shop to purchase a wee dram!
