Spean Bridge in the Great Glen is situated about nine miles north of Fort William on the road to Fort Augustus. The village is ideally located for exploration straight from your Scottish Cottage, with excellent road links to Inverness and the village has a railway station on the West Highland Line.

This scenic region of Scotland attracts many visitors who enjoy outdoor activities and there are certainly plenty of options, with the Nevis Range mountain resort just ten minutes south from Spean Bridge. Here you can try your hand at skiing and snowboarding in the winter months as well as high wire adventures, cycling and many other activities.

Nearby Leannachan Forest is an ideal place for cycling and walking, and the village also has a nine hole golf course with lovely views of Ben Nevis and the surrounding mountains. The River Spean provides opportunities for kayaking, white water canoeing and fishing, so visitors to the village will never be at a loss for something to do.

Spean Bridge is well known for its links with the Commando training that took place during World War II; thousands of allied troops were based at nearby Achnacarry Castle and trained in the countryside around the village. Their service is commemorated by the Commando Monument a mile to the north of the village, which should not be missed. From here, you can also enjoy wonderful views over the mountains.

In the village itself you will find a well stocked village shop, but if you prefer to eat out, there are various restaurants to choose from. Visitors are also able to watch weaving demonstrations at the Spean Bridge Woollen Mill and the Highland Soap Company has a gift shop in the village.

The Old Smiddy Ref: CC511133
The Old Smiddy is a detached stone cottage situated in the charming village of Spean Bridge.  Originally the village blacksmith’s cottage and forge, it dates back over 250 years.  It has now been painstakingly restored and refurbished, blending historical and modern architecture and design to create a cottage of great charm and character with modern luxury.  It holds a Visit Scotland 4 star grading.  Downstairs the cottage retains its lovely old slate flooring, oak beams and large fireplace.  The accommodation is open-plan, with a modern kitchen, a dining area with large solid wood table, and a deep leather suite set around the large fireplace in the lounge area.  A beautifully presented double bedroom downstairs benefits from large picture windows overlooking the private patio area with the river beyond.  A wrought iron spiral staircase leads up the open plan first floor, with four single beds.  The property is situated next to Smiddy House and Russells, a “Restaurant with rooms” run by the owner of the cottage.  This 2 AA rosette restaurant has a reputation for superb food using fresh local produce, and visitors are welcome to dine there in the evening if they would like a change from self-catering! 
The Old Smiddy is ideally placed for exploring the rest of the Highlands, with Oban, Inverness and the Isle of Skye all within easy reach.

Situated on an isthmus in-between River Lochy and Loch Arkaig with the tumbling river Arkaig a few hundred yards away, Heron is surrounded by lochs, mountains and superb wildlife. With wonderful walks and cycle tracks right on the doorstep, Achnacarry Estate is an ideal retreat for an active outdoor holiday or peaceful retreat.
There is an attractive lawned area of garden to the front and a pretty courtyard to the rear of the building. The steading retains its original whinstone facade with traditional large sash windows and the original bell tower with weathervane atop. There is ample car parking for up to two cars and a covered cycle rack area is provided for visitors’ use.
