The Highlands region consists of distinctive sub-regions each with their own characteristics and unique charms, extending from Fort William and Lochaber in the south to the Northern Highlands.

Fort William is considered by many as the 'outdoor capital' of Scotland, this bustling town situated on the shores of Loch Linnhe has lots of places to eat and drink, interesting shops and is a great base for a wide selection of outdoor activities. The town is handy for trips into the dramatic and brooding Glen Coe and is the 'road to the Isles' which takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. The town is also right next to the world famous Ben Nevis (and its glen), Scotland's highest mountain.

To the north is the iconic Loch Ness, some 23 miles long and 700 feet deep; in fact deep enough for a monster. Take a cruise to visit Urquhart Castle a once famous Great Glen fortress; there's a visitor centre both here and on shore at Drumnadrochit.

'The city of the Highlands' Inverness is today a modern thriving city on the banks of the River Ness. It has a rich historical and cultural history with plenty of attractions including a great castle. Close by is Fort George a well preserved 18th century fortification built in the terrible aftermath of the Battle of Culloden, facing out over the Moray Firth.

To the east are the Black Isle and the Moray Firth, dotted with traditional fishing villages, hidden bays and golden sandy beaches. It's a renowned dolphin watching area where you can see them quite close up from the shore if you're lucky.

Further north still is the awe inspiring Northern Highlands, with plenty of castles and ancient monuments, massive lochs, atmospheric mountains and glens and magnificent coastlines that stretch for miles. This is a sparsely populated region where you can really get away from everyday life and connect with nature.

This detached former mill enjoys a unique and secluded position beside a stream, in a sheltered cove, with sweeping views across Loch Broom and down to the pretty town of Ullapool and is a perfect holiday retreat. Experience a boat trip around the Summer Isles, a cluster of uninhabited isles, view the seals and admire the wild, rugged scenery of Wester Ross. Visit the Arboretum at Leckmeln, dating back from the 1870s, which contains rare and unusual trees, hybrid rhododendrons, azaleas and a wide range of other shrubs. There are incredible limestone caves at Elphin which recently yielded a bear skeleton. Nearby attractions include Inverewe Gardens, Lael Forest Garden, the Benn Nighe National Nature Reserve and Gairloch, with its choice of beaches and watersports. There are golf courses at Ullapool (9 holes), Gairloch and Strathpeffer, plus fishing in many surrounding lochs for brown trout, and limited opportunities for salmon and sea trout in nearby rivers. Enjoy spectacular views of the Falls of Measach from the suspension bridge at the National Trust’s Corrieshalloch Gorge. There is a supermarket and a good selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and sports facilities in Ullapool, approximately 1 mile away, as well as sea-angling.

This location makes an excellent base for exploring the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Mull, Skye and the Small Isles. There are fabulous walks on offer and an abundance of wildlife. Otterburn gets its name from the numerous sightings of otters that can be viewed from the property’s windows! The house is south-facing and has beautiful loch views from almost every window. Strontian is a little Highland village about 20 miles southwest of Fort William via the Ardgour ferry (a short 3-minute crossing). Loch Sunart offers good sea fishing and a charter boat is available, along with small self-drive hire boats. Strontian and the surrounding areas offer a good selection of hotels/restaurants which serve a wide variety of cuisine, including local sea food and venison. There are numerous walks and cycle routes, and it is one of the best places in Scotland to view the native wildlife, including pine martens, otters, eagles, red squirrels, deer, seals, wading birds, buzzards and rare butterflies. After leaving Strontian, the road heads west through a spectacular landscape, which alternates between the lochside and the famous Sunart Oakwoods. Visit the Stevenson lighthouse, the most westerly point on the British mainland, where there is a visitor centre and café. Visit the lovely beach at Sanna and go on a day trip to Tobermory on Mull. There are also beaches at Morar, Arisaig and Mallaig, where guests can also get a ferry to Skye and the Small Isles. Fort William can be reached in under an hour and has a leisure centre, golf course and a boat trip on Loch Linnhe. The town is dominated by Ben Nevis, Britain’s largest mountain, and just beyond that is Aonach Mor, with world-class mountain biking trails and excellent skiing in winter. In an elevated position with wonderful views over the Caledonian Canal to the mountains beyond, this detached house makes an ideal holiday base for exploring the Highlands and the Western Isles. Fort William is the nearest town with an array of shops, bars and restaurants and the area is known as the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’. Outdoor activities include mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, climbing, fishing, horse-riding, golf and a variety of water sports. The magnificent scenery has been used as the backdrop for many well known films including Braveheart and Rob Roy, whilst the West Highland Steam Train (seasonal) passes the Glenfinnan Viaduct as depicted in one of the Harry Potter movies. Wildlife is in abundance and offers the chance to spot golden eagles, deer, otters, porpoises and dolphins. There are plenty of beautiful gardens and ruined castles to be visited and the area is famous for its rich historical legacy. For a more relaxed pace, watch the boats sail through the Caledonian Canal, take a trip up Aonach Mor in a gondola or wander around a network of forest trails, the Great Glen Way, canal paths and shoreline, simply enjoying the natural beauty of this stunning location. Glencoe, Oban, Loch Ness, Inverness and the Isle of Skye are easily accessible. Shop and pub 3½ miles.
