Lairg lies on the southern shores of Loch Shin, surrounded by forest and only four miles from the Falls of Shin, where salmon leap upstream in a thrilling flock of migration. From Lairg you can travel north deeper into the wild through glens and traditional crofting settlements. Native wildlife and highland flora and fauna provide the setting for a wonderful array of country walks, hiking and horse riding trails, including through nearby Dalchork Forest.

From the centre of the village, cyclists can take the well-loved Assynt route to Loch Shin, taking in the breathtaking Scottish scenery. Highlights include the Suilven Peak and the ruins of Ardvreck Castle. Lairg is an excellent centre from which to explore the outer reaches of Sutherland. Travel west to the quaint craft shops of artisan Rosehall and further to the rugged coastline of Drumbeg and Nedd, or take a trip north west to visit the traditional fishing community at Kinlochbervie and the spectacular beaches of Durness.

The region is famous for golf, so heading east to the charming town of Dornoch will provide a contrast to the enchanting peace of Lairg. Here, Dornoch Cathedral nestles amongst gift shops, whiskey pubs and the excellent Royal Dornoch Golf Course.

Boats can be hired in Lochinver for sea angling. Knockan Crag, a National Nature Reserve, is also nearby. The immediate area is heaven for outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors generally. Hill-walking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and sailing are all local sports. There is a thriving pony trekking centre in the village, with rides amidst spectacular scenery. Fishing in the surrounding lochs and rivers as well as sea fishing is a popular pastime. The area is also a haven for wildlife, with seals and otters in the bay and numerous varieties of birds attracted to the region. The beaches in this area are renowned. Sandwood bay is particularly noted, with a wonderful walk across the machair to its secluded sweeping sands. Sheigra bay is about 500 yards away from the cottage and Polin and Oldmoreshore are also close by. Kinlochbervie is the nearest main village. The most northerly port on the west coast of Scotland, this pretty village has an active working harbour and offers good local facilities, including a shop and post office, as well as a hotel with restaurant open all year to non-residents for meals.
