The Highland city of Inverness has many historical buildings that mingle amongst a thriving shopping centre and a lovely riverside location; the perfect base for exploring the region.

The River Ness runs through the city and offers scenic riverside cycling and walking within the city boundaries; from the waterside there are great views of the castle which occupies the old town and dominates the sky line. Other points of interest include the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and the fascinating Church Street which has some of the oldest buildings in the city. Relax in riverside restaurants and busy pavement cafes or enjoy the mix of independent retail shops.

Cruises are available down the Caledonian Canal to Loch Ness and Culloden Battlefield isn't too far away where there's a new visitor centre to help you learn everything there is to know about this historic place. Chanonry Point is well worth a visit and has panoramic views where you may be lucky enough to see the bottle-nosed dolphins which are attracted by the strong currents. Fort George is a popular visitor attraction, it's still an operational army barracks, but there's plenty to explore.

A cottage holiday here provides the opportunity to explore this fascinating city and to explore the beautiful and dramatic heather-covered Highlands which easily accessible.
