Find cottages in Fort AugustusVisit Fort Augustus

Situated in the Great Glen, mid-way between Fort William and Inverness on the southern shores of Loch Ness, is the small village of Fort Augustus.

A popular holiday destination, Fort Augustus is located in a very scenic Highland region of Scotland and has a choice of outdoor activities and historical attractions that will keep you busy during your stay.

Fort Augustus has easy access to Loch Ness, whether it's exploring by car or catching one of the many boat trips that will take you out onto the loch. The village is also located by the impressive Caledonian Canal, which stretches for 60 miles, and again many visitors enjoy exploring this canal by boat, or simply take relaxing walks alongside it to watch the barges navigating the locks.

The Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre details the history of this waterway and much of the area, and for those who enjoy stepping back in time there is also the Clansmen Centre, where guides in traditional Highland Dress demonstrate weaponry dating from as far back as the 17th Century.

The village is steeped in history and many of the houses that line the streets have been built using stone quarried from the area. The striking Fort Augustus Abbey, built in 1880, is also made from local stone and is certainly one of the village's most notable landmarks.

Fort Augustus is the ideal location for an outdoor activity holiday and is an extremely popular walking destination. It's the starting point for the South Loch Ness trail and the Great Glen Way passes through the village centre. The surrounding Highlands also offer glorious walks and mountain biking trails, and for the more adventurous, there is mountain climbing. Loch Ness, The Caledonian Canal and the nearby River Oich all offer great fishing and Oich has particularly good salmon fishing.

Explore a tiny village in the heart of the Scottish Highlands; search for cottages in Fort Augustus for a tranquil and scenic getaway.
