Find cottages in Edinburgh and the LothiansVisit Edinburgh and the Lothians

Whether you're situated in Edinburgh itself or somewhere nearby, a self-catering holiday in this region combines the very best of city culture and quiet coastal and countryside locations.

Edinburgh needs little introduction as it's well known as one of Scotland's jewels in the crown. This majestic city is packed with a wonderful mix of historical buildings that tell the tale of a fascinating past, lovely green open spaces, first class shops and a fine collection of restaurants and pubs. It's a place to enjoy rich cultural heritage, bustling city life and some of the UK's most glorious countryside handily placed right on the door step.

The city attracts visitors from around the world who come to see its wonderful architecture and learn about its rich history. The Old Town is well known for the Royal Mile which extends along cobbled streets from Edinburgh Castle to Grassmarket. The New Town is equally fascinating and in contrast with the Old Town has a well ordered street grid layout with wide boulevards and grand neoclassical architecture. In both areas you'll find national galleries and museums and a host of historically significant buildings. Located just outside the city in Holyrood Park, Arthurs Seat offers a relatively easy climb to the top with some spectacular views.

Horticulturalists will love the wonderful array of colours that can be found at the Royal Botanic Gardens, which has one of the world's largest living collections of plants you'll find. More regal encounters can be found on board the Royal Yacht Britannia, now permanently moored in Leith. Despite now being out of service it remains a uniquely fascinating icon from British history.

The Lothians rich heritage extends to the surrounding countryside of west Lothian, with castles and historical sites, rolling countryside and country walks. In east Lothian you'll find beautiful stretches of quiet sandy beaches and some of the finest golf courses in the world.

So this area serves both those looking for an active outdoor break as well as those interested in a first class city break. A great combination of culture, history, food, drink and the great outdoors!

Take a look at our selection of holiday cottages in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Bridge House Ref: S4619

Perfect for a relaxing break, offering country living at its best, just a 10 minute stroll from the beach and within easy reach of Edinburgh’s city pleasures, these two stylish and delightful properties sit near a picturesque lake within 150 acres of stunning parkland and woodlands surrounding the elegant Georgian mansion of Broxmouth. Visitors are welcome to roam the park, spotting roe deer among the trees and enjoying trout fishing on the lake and stream or simply relaxing at the water’s edge, watching out for the local heron swooping in to pinch the fish. The main house sits close to the site of the Battle of Dunbar and the grounds themselves are steeped in history – the mount from where Cromwell commanded the battle is located in the garden and a beautiful cedar tree in the park was planted in 1878 by Queen Victoria in memory of her beloved Albert. Set beside Dunbar Golf Links – with its wonderful views over the Firth of Forth and out to Bass Rock – and within a short drive of many other courses, Broxmouth Park is also a golfers’ haven, whilst its location at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills affords numerous opportunities for keen walkers. The John Muir Way links this area to both Edinburgh and the Borders, with magnificent walking on marked coastal pathways. The coastline abounds with glorious, unspoilt beaches and both sea fishing and seal spotting boat trips depart from the harbour at Dunbar. Home to Concorde and many other aircraft, the Museum of Flight (9 miles) is well worth exploring and at the Seabird Centre at North Berwick visitors can watch the puffins nesting on Bass Rock or gannets diving into the sea. Musselburgh Racecourse (24 miles) offers a great day out, and horse riding, tennis, cycle hire and an indoor swimming pool are all found in and around Dunbar (1 mile), which also offers a selection of shops, pubs and restaurants as well as a station for the 20 minute train journey to the centre of beautiful Edinburgh city.
