Newton Stewart is a picturesque market town on the banks of the River Cree and ideally placed for wonderful days out in the nearby Galloway Hills and Galloway Forest Park.

Popular outdoor activities in the region include mountain biking (with no less than five of the renowned 7Stanes mountain biking centres in the region), pony trekking, fishing and hiking. There are particularly beautiful forest and hill walks through Glen Trool, a forest park located close to Newton Stewart. The Southern Upland Way, a long distance hiking trail leading to the Eastern coast of Scotland, also passes through the region between Portpatrick and Wanlockhead. Sailing is available on castle Loch and Loch Ken, which also offers wakeboarding and waterskiing.

Towns of note within the area include Dumfries (the administrative centre), Castle Douglas, Kircudbright, Whithorn and Stranraer. Wanlockhead, Drummore and Portpatrick are also worth a place on your agenda.

Scotland's first church was established by St Ninian in Whithorn and the nearby St Ninian's cave is a pilgrimage site. Visitors can view a small aquarium and feed deep-sea fish at the Port Logan Fish Pond, whereas Port Logan Botanic Gardens is an ideal location for a picnic. Nature lovers can enjoy the reserves at the Wood of Cree, the Mull of Galloway, Mereshead and Ken Dee Marshes.

Galloway is famous for its dairy industry. The Cream of Galloway ice-cream, produced near Kirkcudbright, is famous throughout the region. The region is noted for its pub food.

This delightful cottage is just the ticket for a cosy holiday in the pretty coastal village of Port William. Port William offers everything you could possibly need and all virtually on the doorstep! This is an ideal base for walking, cycling, fishing and golf. Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland’s best kept secrets and this area known as The Machars is no exception with something for everyone. This magnificent coastline is endowed with sandy bays and stony beaches and hidden caves all designed to inspire the imagination. The wildlife is second to none including otters and seals being a frequent sight especially before sunset. Monreith has a lovely sandy beach and a 9 hole golf course. There is a memorial to the author, Gavin Maxwell of ’Ring of Bright Water’ fame, in the form of a bronze otter. Scotland’s National Book Town at Wigtown is less than a half hour’s enjoyable drive away and besides playing host to an exciting annual literary festival it is also a pleasant little town offering many facilities. Essentially Wigtown is a book lover’s haven and with over a quarter of a million old and new books to choose from, you’ll not leave empty handed! Scotland’s most southerly distillery sits beside the luscious green banks of the River Bladnoch, from which it takes its name. It has been producing the "Spirit of the Lowlands" since 1817. Can you refuse a ’wee dram’! Guests are assured of a warm welcome when visiting Port William. The village holds an annual Carnival Week with events for all the family. Harbour View is located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Luce Bay, from Burrow Head to The Mull of Galloway has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation to protect the natural habitats of fauna and wild flora much of it rare and protected. For nature watch lovers both botanists and bird watchers will be delighted by the variety of wildlife to be found both on land and sea. Badgers, deer and foxes are occasionally seen close by. A visit to the nearby Burrow Head will take you back to the famous closing scenes of the cult film The Wickerman which was shot at nearby Burrow Head which is on the route to the Isle of Whithorn.
