Find cottages in DumfriesVisit Dumfries

Located in Dumfries and Galloway the market town of Dumfries is an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful region in south west Scotland.

Known as 'The Queen of the South' (Also the name of its football team), Dumfries occupies a charming location on the banks of the River Nith. One of the town's biggest claims to fame is its connection with the poet Robert Burns, who spent the last five years of his life living here. The house where he resided is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. The historic Globe Inn, one of Burns' favourite haunts, is still a favourite with visitors to the town today.

The region of Dumfries and Galloway is an area of unspoilt scenic beauty, with lush, green forests covering a rolling landscape of hills and mountains. Lovers of wildlife are spoilt with a host of nature reserves located here; keep your eyes peeled for birds of prey, red deer and red squirrels, all of which make their homes in the area.

Just eight miles from the town sits the charming village of New Abbey, nestled in the shadow of Criffel Hill. The village is most famous for the nearly complete ruin of the 13th century Sweetheart Abbey, built by Lady Devorgilla of Galloway in memory of her late husband.

To experience fascinating history, natural scenic splendour and nearby unspoilt coastline, check out the availability of holiday cottages in Dumfries today.

This super, spacious, newly built, light filled bungalow is just the ticket for exploring the ancient town of Sanquhar and the lovely Scottish region of Dumfries & Galloway. Sanquhar was originally called ’Sean Caer’ meaning ’old fort’ or ’old castle’ in the Geltic tongue. Today the castle lies in ruins next to Scotland’s much loved coast to coast walk, the Southern Upland Way, which runs from Portpatrick in the west to Cockburnspath in the east. Sanquhar is the site of the world’s oldest Post Office and the old town is steeped in history including the imposing Tolbooth, which was erected in 1735 at the instigation of Charles Duke of Queensberry and designed by William Adam. For fans of the great Robbie Burns, Sanquhar lies on the Burns Heritage Trail which begins at his boyhood home in Alloway and takes in Ellisland, his former home in Dumfries & Galloway. Burns drew his inspiration from the area’s wild and dramatic landscapes, its towns and its people.
