A spacious and very well-equipped traditional stone house, sitting in a woodland area on Mar Estate at Inverey. Offering magnificent views across the Upper Dee Valley to Ben Macdui, the heart of the Cairngorm National Park, here you will find mountain activities which have made this part of the Highlands a famous tourist area. It is an ideal area for those who simply wish to wander through idyllic scenery and perhaps see a glimpse of an osprey, golden eagle or capercailzie.
Braemar village nestling amongst heather covered hills, is the setting for the annual Highland Gathering, also Braemar Castle with its barrel-vaulted ceilings, underground prison and central tower with spiral staircase, has much historical interest. The area abounds with castles, including Balmoral, the Scottish baronial mansion which has been a royal residence since 1852. The Royal Family traditionally spend their summer holidays here, and the grounds are ideal for walking and pony trekking. Dunnottar Castle is one of Scotland’s finest ruined castles, a huge 9th-century fortress set on a three-sided sheer cliff jutting into the sea, with dramatic views out to the crashing sea.
For family entertainment, pay a visit to the Archaeolink Prehistory Park, which gives an insight into the area’s Pictish heritage. The park includes a reconstructed Iron Age Farm, a hillside archaeological site and lively audio-visual displays designed to bring prehistory to life. Also well worth a visit is the Cairngorm Whisky Centre in Tomintoul (1 hour), with its tasting room offering more than 1,000 brands of whisky.
There is extensive hill walking and challenging mountain climbing opportunities from the door and in the winter months if sufficient snow, good skiing at Glenshee (20 mins). For those who do not wish to climb the mountains but still want to see the awe inspiring views, take the chairlift at Glenshee to the observation point a short distance from the top of the Cairnwell mountain. Braemar golf course (18 holes) is a gem. Fishing on the River Dee (for information see caretaker). Roe and red deer are present and stalking can be arranged (in advance) through the Estate. These two adjoining, terraced holiday properties are located in a good central location in the pretty village of Tomintoul, the highest village in the Highlands, within the stunning scenery of the Cairngorm National Park. The Hunting Lodge is an Austrian chalet set in its own grounds in green managed woods and large open spaces, accessed by a rough track, this property provides peace and privacy yet is close to all amenities, and the excellent grocer in Kingussie will deliver. True to its name, The Hunting Lodge offers fishing and rough shooting by arrangement, and is also well placed for accessing all areas of one of the best-served holiday areas in Scotland. Located within the Cairngorm National Park, Kingussie has links with the TV drama series Monarch of the Glen, which was broadcast by the BBC and was set in the area. The Ardverikie Estate, where Monarch of the Glen was filmed, is about 12 miles from Kingussie and was also a location for the movies Mrs Brown and The Missionary. Notable attractions for visitors to the area include The Highland Wildlife Park where Scottish wildlife can be experienced in the setting of the Scottish Highlands; there is a safari section as well as the more usual walk-around area. A variety of animals found in Scotland today can be seen there, as well as those from mountainous regions all over the world. Another tourist attraction found locally are the ruins of the early 18th century Ruthven Barracks which were built on the site of Ruthven Castle near the original site of the village - the flood plain of the River Spey caused the village to be relocated to its present day site. Just 3 miles away is the The Highland Folk Museum, which was the first British mainland open air museum. The main bedroom has a king sized bed and the second bedroom a 3’ divan with small bunk beds, ideal for children. The cottage garden opposite provides an ideal spot for a BBQ or quiet drink whilst planning the next day’s excursion.
For larger groups of friends or family, Failte may also be available to let with the adjoining cottage, Kangei, which sleeps 4/5
