Harbour House Ref: UEJ

With magnificent views across the Sound of Jura, Scarba and Mull, this listed building, dating from 1815, stands at the water’s edge in a sheltered peaceful bay known as Crinan Harbour. Attached to the owner’s home, it retains many original features, to provide very comfortable and spacious holiday accommodation on three floors. Perfect for family holidays, the house boasts an established garden with a sitting-out area overlooking the bay.
Fascinating walks from the house allow visitors the opportunity to explore this area of great natural beauty and to observe the abundant local wildlife, including small red deer, owls, otters and seals. Harbour House is also ideally situated for all forms of boating, sailing, canoeing and diving, and there is a small slipway in front of the house for those wishing to bring their own boats. The famous Crinan Canal flows into the sea just around the corner, and offers quayside coffee shop and bar. There are several excellent restaurants in the area, including the renowned Crinan Hotel.
From Crinan, a walk or cycle ride along the canal towpath leads to Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig (7 miles), and Lochgilphead (7 miles) where there is a variety of shops, restaurants, a sports centre, swimming pool, and 9-hole golf course. Kilmory Woodland Park boasts an Iron Age fort, bird hide and lochside views, and Castle Riding Centre runs highly enjoyable riding courses as well as renting out bicycles and golf equipment.
There are many places of interest to visit, including the prehistoric linear cemetery at Kilmartin Glen. Island trips to Mull, Iona and Staffa can be made from Oban (30 miles). Oban is also home to the Oban Sea Life Centre and the Oban Rare Breeds Farm Park. Sea fishing can be arranged and there is fly fishing within 3 miles. Boat trips and riding are also available locally. Shop 7 miles.

Ideally based for exploring the west coast, there are plenty of ferry trips nearby to Mull, Arran, Gigha, Islay, Colonsay or Tiree. The bustling harbour town of Oban, known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’, is a scenic drive north and is home to an array of shops and restaurants. Inveraray Castle, historic Kilmartin Glen, and the Crinan Canal make for wonderful days out. Ardmaddy Castle and Gardens are 3½ miles over the hill, and can be accessed on foot, by 4-wheel drive or via the road to Seil Island. Guests enjoy free access to the gardens and are also welcome to use the estate’s tennis court. Small motor boats can be hired at Ardmaddy. Free fishing can also be arranged on the estate’s well-stocked hill loch.
There are plenty of hill and forest trails for mountain biking and leisurely walks, or visit one of the magnificent local gardens. Late 16th century Ardbrecknish House is in a magnificent Highland setting with wonderful views of mountains and glens. These attractive holiday properties are set amid 20 acres of mature woodland close to beautiful Loch Awe - 26 miles long and Britain’s longest freshwater loch. A whole host of indoor and outdoor amenities are available on site, and although the setting is quiet and peaceful, it is within easy reach of restaurants, shops, golf courses, and the small village of Kilmartin Glen and museum, the richest area in Europe for prehistoric remains, making these properties an ideal holiday location and a perfect touring base. A visitors’ reception/library area provides a wealth of information on the local history, archaeology, wildlife, gardens, forest and hillside walks, as well as the year-round activities available around Argyll and the West Highlands.
The Ardbrecknish Room has a welcoming open fire, small dance floor, pool table, darts and Scottish Carpet Bowls. The adjoining cosy traditional bar with its woodburner provides a perfect way to end the day; perhaps sampling one or two of the many malt whiskies.
At the shore, just 10 minutes’ walk, motor boats, rowing boats and canoes can be hired to explore the enchanting islands and ruined castles of the loch, or maybe fishing the loch for salmon, char, monster pike and brown trout. A British record brown trout of 31lbs 10oz was caught in March 2002. Tuition and/or a fishing guide is available by arrangement.
The surrounding area offers a wealth of interest and fantastic scenery. Opposite Ardbrecknish is majestic Ben Cruachan, and further north are the impressive Glen Coe and Ben Nevis ranges, a mecca for hill walkers all year round. Both regions have ski centres and within an hour’s drive is the busy town of Oban, ‘Gateway to the Isles’, from where modern ferries take you to Mull and Iona, the cradle of Christianity, Staffa, the inspiration for Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave Overture, and to other Hebridean gems. Oban has a sea life centre and an excellent golf course. The elegant town of Inveraray on Loch Fyne only 12 miles away, to the south is the Crinan Canal with its stepped locks, you can walk or drive a delightful route along its 9-mile length. Family-friendly bar and restaurant on site.

Glasgow is only 20-30 minutes’ flying time from Machrihanish Airport, which in turn is 10 minutes’ driving time from the property. British Airways operate two flights daily, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Campbeltown is one of a handful of areas in Scotland categorised as a whisky producing region and is home to the Campbeltown Single Malt - at one point having 34 distilleries and proclaiming itself the whisky capital of the world. The town boasts two distilleries as well as a museum, heritage centre and harbour, with an annual regatta and music festival. Other attractions in the burgh include The Wee Picture Cinema and a recreation centre (fitness centre, swimming-pool, café and library). The town is well served with supermarkets, independently-owned local shops and excellent hotels and restaurants offering the finest local produce. The surrounding area is well known for its fine beaches, unspoilt countryside and scenic walks, with the addition of the Kintyre Way making this an ideal location from which to explore the Kintyre Peninsula, including Skipness Castle, the village of Carradale, the Mull of Kintyre and Gigha. Lying just off the west coast of Kintyre, the Isle of Gigha offers a pleasant day trip. Within a short distance there are many quiet and sandy beaches to explore and there is easy access to the Isles of Islay, Arran and Jura. Jura, one of the wildest and most mountainous of the Inner Hebrides, is an ideal place to go for peace and quiet. Islay is great for wildlife enthusiasts, as it boasts a large RSPB reserve, a wintering population of barnacle and white-fronted geese, and a Wildlife Information Centre. These cottages (refs SBW, SRRL and UAA, see below for individual description) are set on the beautiful Kildalloig Estate on The Mull of Kintyre. Set against the rugged beauty of the sea and the wild landscape of the Kintyre Peninsula, they provide an idyllic sanctuary, offering modern amenities and historic coastal charm. Surrounded by natural beauty and sea views, each cottage is comfortably furnished, provides wonderful character and history and has been thoughtfully arranged to accommodate couples, honeymooners, families, golfers, hikers, birdwatchers and other visitors. There are wonderful stretches of secluded beach and coastal walks (with coves and rockpools, ideal for children), and the fascinating little island of Davaar with its lighthouse, cave painting and wild goats which can be reached on foot at low tide. There are marvellous walks along the coast and through woodland on the Estate – where seals, otters and a variety of birds can be seen – and in the hills, where golden eagles soar. The cottages provide the classic Scottish seaside holiday spot - with an abundant number of rocky and sandy beaches close by and pristine sandy beaches within 5-15 minutes’ drive. Activities locally include surfing, sea fishing, horse trekking, mountain biking and island hopping to Gigha, Islay and Arran. Kintyre is home to five golf courses - the most famous is the championship course at Macrihanish with its stunning and infamous first hole. There are a further two 18-hole golf courses - Southend and Machrihanish Dunes and two excellent 9-hole courses in Carradale and Tarbet. Campbeltown (4 miles) has supermarkets, shops, restaurants and leisure centre (with swimming pool, gym, sauna and sun beds). In its day, Campbeltown had over 30 whisky distilleries. Today only two survive – Glen Scotia and Springbank, with the latter offering tours by appointment. Further attractions in Campbeltown include the Campbeltown Cross, the quaint Art Deco cinema, the Birds of Prey centre, the Museum, the Linda McCartney memorial garden and the Mull Lighthouse. Shops and pub 3 miles.

The sea loch is surrounded by mountains, woodlands and streams, has an abundance of water sports available and there are marked lochside and forest walks from the door. Sea angling in the loch and river fishing by permit.
Explore the area close by around Loch Fyne with its famous Oyster Bar and visit Inveraray with its picturesque castle and historic dungeon. Visit Dunoon, the capital of this area which hosts the Highland Gathering in late summer, the largest of its kind in the world.
Within only a 14 mile drive you can explore the west side of Loch Lomond, visiting the historic hamlet of Luss, or take a Loch Cruise around or out to one of the islands. Loch Lomond shores, 20 miles, has excellent shopping, restaurants and water sports. An indoor pool and leisure facilities, along with a 9 hole golf course at Drimsynie, are only 1 mile from the cottage. Shop 2 miles, pub 1 mile.
