Oban is the ferry port that starts many a Scottish island adventure but this pretty and vibrant town deserves a much closer look in its own right.

The crescent shaped hills that surround Oban Bay forms the port town of Oban, where there are plenty of excellent shops, cafes and restaurants, many of which overlook the picturesque bay, in fact Oban has a great selection of seafood restaurants which is why it's known as the 'Seafood Capital of Scotland'.

One of the town's most prominent features is McCaig's Tower, the grand Victorian folly that looks more like a misplaced Roman Coliseum high above the town; the views from there over the town and far out to sea are well worth the effort. There are also great views at Dunstaffnage Castle, once the stronghold of the McDougalls, nowadays offering superb panoramas over the Firth of Lorn.

To get active try kayaking, gorge walking, coasteering and more at Stramash Outdoor Activities or for less energetic activity why not stroll the Arduaine Gardens, learn about local history at the free War and Peace Museum or surround yourself in traditional music at the Skipinnish Ceilidh House.

Oban cottages also give you a great base for visiting the nearby islands of Mull, Iona and of course, Staffa with the unique and world-famous Fingall's Cave rock formation.

Close to Loch Seil, enjoy boating and fishing

These two stone holiday cottages are set in a courtyard in the owners’ grounds, close to the beautiful Loch Seil. You can fish on the loch using the small boat that has been provided (available free of charge), or simply enjoy the lovely scenery and good local walking. Fishing enthusiasts can also try their luck catching some salmon, or enjoy sea fishing, both of which can also be arranged. Half a mile away is a small private beach, whilst the famous ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ to Seil Island is just a mile away. Easdale is 7 miles. To the north is Oban, 10 miles, a busy fishing port, with an 18-hole golf course, many shops, a cinema, indoor pool, tennis and squash courts, and a good choice of restaurants. Visitors to Oban, which is overlooked by the Greek/Roman-style MacCaig’s Folly, also benefit from opportunities to catch a ferry to any of the several islands off shore.
