Oban is the ferry port that starts many a Scottish island adventure but this pretty and vibrant town deserves a much closer look in its own right.

The crescent shaped hills that surround Oban Bay forms the port town of Oban, where there are plenty of excellent shops, cafes and restaurants, many of which overlook the picturesque bay, in fact Oban has a great selection of seafood restaurants which is why it's known as the 'Seafood Capital of Scotland'.

One of the town's most prominent features is McCaig's Tower, the grand Victorian folly that looks more like a misplaced Roman Coliseum high above the town; the views from there over the town and far out to sea are well worth the effort. There are also great views at Dunstaffnage Castle, once the stronghold of the McDougalls, nowadays offering superb panoramas over the Firth of Lorn.

To get active try kayaking, gorge walking, coasteering and more at Stramash Outdoor Activities or for less energetic activity why not stroll the Arduaine Gardens, learn about local history at the free War and Peace Museum or surround yourself in traditional music at the Skipinnish Ceilidh House.

Inveraray Castle, historic Kilmartin Glen, and the Crinan Canal make for wonderful days out. Ardmaddy Castle and Gardens are 3½ miles over the hill, and can be accessed on foot, by 4-wheel drive or via the road to Seil Island. Guests enjoy free access to the gardens and are also welcome to use the estate’s tennis court. Small motor boats can be hired at Ardmaddy. Free fishing can also be arranged on the estate’s well-stocked hill loch.
There are plenty of hill and forest trails for mountain biking and leisurely walks, or visit one of the magnificent local gardens. Boasting superb uninterrupted sea views and access to the beach across a small field to the rear of the property, it is tastefully furnished, and offers excellent holiday accommodation for families and larger parties. The picturesque conservation village of Ellenabeich with its small ferry to the slate island of Easdale is just a short drive. Here visitors can learn about the history of the area at the museum. The ferry to Luing is a similar distance. Oban is just 12 miles, offering many shops and restaurants. It also houses a distillery with regular tours and tasting sessions of the fine malts. Other islands are easily accessible from Oban, with regular ferry trips available.
Golfing, fishing, sea trips, walking and cycling are all available locally, with many historical attractions including McCaigs Tower and the 13th century Dunstaffnage Castle at Dunbeg worth a visit. Shops and pubs 1 mile.

Ideal base for visiting the Isles

Esplanade Court is situated in a particularly superb location overlooking Oban Bay, on the lovely west coast of Scotland. The holiday apartments have qualified for the STB 4 Star rating. They are equipped and furnished to a good standard with each one having a panoramic view over the bay and out to the isles of Kerrera, Mull and Lismore. Oban is a lively west coast town with lots going on for the visitor. It is central for touring the west coast, or take a boat trip to the above islands and Iona which leave daily. There is a lovely sandy beach at Ganavan which is 1½ miles away. There are some very good restaurants in which to eat dinner in the evening, after maybe a days climbing, walking or enjoying some of the wonderful animal and plant life which the west highlands has to offer.
