The historic town of Banchory lies 20 miles to the west of Aberdeen. Located on the banks of the River Dee, the town is surrounded by beautiful rural countryside and is ideally situated to explore Royal Deeside, the Cairngorms National Park and the north east coast of Scotland.

Banchory features many attractions, including the 16th century Crathes Castle with its famous walled garden, and Drum Castle, located close by. There is a small museum with displays relating to local history, including the town's famous resident, fiddler James Scott Skinner, who composed The Bonnie Lass o' Bon Accord.

A short walk from the town centre, The Falls of Feugh tumble from the River Dee and at certain times of the year, salmon can be spotted leaping out of the water. Just across the stone bridge is a tea room, where an assortment of mouthwatering home-made cakes and scones await. Another notable landmark close to the town is Scoulty Tower, which is reached via a pleasant woodland walk. Those who climb to the top are rewarded with superb views of the Dee Valley and surrounding countryside.

Throughout the area there are numerous activities, including mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, trout fishing, quad biking and archery. The Deeside Activity Park is the place to find an array of outdoor and indoor pursuits and there is plenty to keep the kids entertained, including a play area and an outdoor adventure zone.

For golfers, there are several superb courses, including the Banchory Golf Club, where Open Winner Paul Lawrie began his career. The surrounding area features some of Scotland's finest countryside and has connections with Royalty. Situated within the grounds of Craigievar Castle, these picture perfect holiday cottages are surrounded by 90-acres of parkland. The castle is a fine example of Scottish Baronial architecture and has stood for almost four centuries against a backdrop of rolling hills. The great tower looks just as it did when it was completed in 1626. Inside is a fine collection of family portraits and original furniture. Stroll around the castles kitchen garden, or enjoy waymarked trails through the surrounding parkland, where swallows, fieldfares and redwings can be spotted. Alford, with its butchers, bakers, pubs and restaurants can be reached in an easy 15 minutes by car. Visit Alford Heritage Centre, which contains displays on village and farm life from the past. Most of the area is agricultural, and wildlife is abundant. Red squirrels and roe deer are a common sight in the woods, the elusive wildcat is present but rarely seen. Crathes Castle is less than 20 miles away and Aberdeen can be reached in 40 minutes’ drive. With all modern facilities, it ensures a very relaxing stay in total comfort.
Banchory is a superb base for a varied holiday with Crathes Castle and garden, and Castle Fraser both well worth a visit. Also boasting two golf courses in the town, there is a wider choice in the surrounding area with excellent hillwalking and skiing available in the Cairngorms just a short distance away. A short drive leads to Ballater, where Queen Victoria first arrived in Desside in 1848. Although the line has long since closed, visitors can still visit the elegant train station in the heart of the town centre. Ballater is also an excellent base for local walks and outdoor activities. A popular walk leads to Lochnagar, the much painted and written about mountain by the current Prince of Wales.
Balmoral is easily accessible for the day and the local distillery at Lochnagar is well worth a visit, with tours and tasting of the local malt available. For an alternative day out, Aberdeen - Scotland’s third largest city, is well worth a visit. Many of the parks have been transformed into ‘flower gardens’ and are some of the most beautiful in Britain. There is also an excellent choice of restaurants and pubs and the livley city harbour comes alive in the evening with a number of theatres. Shops ½ mile.
