Braemar village nestling amongst heather covered hills, is the setting for the annual Highland Gathering, also Braemar Castle with its barrel-vaulted ceilings, underground prison and central tower with spiral staircase, has much historical interest. The area abounds with castles, including Balmoral, the Scottish baronial mansion which has been a royal residence since 1852. The Royal Family traditionally spend their summer holidays here, and the grounds are ideal for walking and pony trekking. Dunnottar Castle is one of Scotland’s finest ruined castles, a huge 9th-century fortress set on a three-sided sheer cliff jutting into the sea, with dramatic views out to the crashing sea.
For family entertainment, pay a visit to the Archaeolink Prehistory Park, which gives an insight into the area’s Pictish heritage. The park includes a reconstructed Iron Age Farm, a hillside archaeological site and lively audio-visual displays designed to bring prehistory to life. Also well worth a visit is the Cairngorm Whisky Centre in Tomintoul (1 hour), with its tasting room offering more than 1,000 brands of whisky.
There is extensive hill walking and challenging mountain climbing opportunities from the door and in the winter months if sufficient snow, good skiing at Glenshee (20 mins). For those who do not wish to climb the mountains but still want to see the awe inspiring views, take the chairlift at Glenshee to the observation point a short distance from the top of the Cairnwell mountain. These tastefully converted holiday cottages overlook the stunning Dee Valley in the Cairngorms National Park. Each with their own character, they are ideally situated for exploring the north east of Scotland. Victoria Cottage (Ref: RCHN152) is so named because of its association with Queen Victoria as the place where she first met John Brown; Byron (ref: RCHN150), because this was where the poet is said to have written ’Fair Morven’ and finally Fir Tree (ref: RCHN151), due to the planting of said tree next to the cottage. All are warm and comfortable and benefit from fine views to the front.
Aberdeenshire is a wonderful area to explore and has everything an outdoor enthusiast could wish for such as golf, horse riding, fishing, gliding, cycling and some fantastic walking in the Cairngorms. The kitchen and dining areas at the far end of the room are modern and well equipped. A small French window door opens out onto the cottage garden for visitor’s sloe use. There are two pretty bedrooms upstairs and family sized shower room which is immaculately presented. Ballater is a picturesque and historic Victorian village situated on the banks of the famous river Dee.

Lounge: With wood burning stove (fuel provided) free view TV and DVD with sofa bed (for + 2 with linen provided if required)
Kitchen/Dining: With electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge (with ice box) and washing machine.
Bedroom : With double bed. A spacious room with built in wardrobes and a chest of drawers.
Bathroom: With shower over bath, WC and wash basin.

All fuel, power, bed linen and towels included. High chair available.Garden with furniture and BBQ. Off road parking for 2 cars. Please note that should there be adverse weather conditions you will require a four wheel vehicle to be able to get directly to the property door, although of course you can park your car on the roadside and walk up to the property if necessary.  Access to the cottage (if no 4x4 vehicle) would still be available but parking right next to the cottage may not be. Assistance, in these unusual circumstrances, would be given.  The owner owns a stretch of local river from Luib Bridge to Ballater Bridge (20km), day/week/season permits are available, £20 per rod per day, discount given for weekly/season permits. Please ask the owners for details.
