This stone-built Edwardian mansion with its converted coach house and stable is situated near Selkirk, in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Edinburgh to the north, and the Berwickshire and Northumbrian coast to the east, are all within a pleasant hour’s drive.
A perfect base for a peaceful country holiday, the cottages of Abbey Court, the individual character of the Coach House properties and the spacious apartments located within Whitmuir Hall itself, offer a range of accommodation for all tastes, seasons and party sizes. There are 32 acres of private grounds consisting of woodland and lawns, and a recreation building containing a heated indoor swimming pool (access by arrangement).
Recreational possibilities include: 21 golf courses included in the Freedom of the Fairways Passport; walking, whether gently through woods and alongside rivers and towns, or on the more challenging Southern Upland and St Cuthbert’s Ways; cycling for all abilities on quiet local roads, on the many great cycle routes nearby or try some downhill trails at Glentress Forest, Peebles (cycle store available at the properties); or have fun on their Go Ape tree top adventure course; fishing for salmon and trout on the River Tweed and its tributaries, or on stocked lochs for trout and coarse fish. Historic houses, abbeys and castles including Melrose Abbey (burial place of the the heart of Robert the Bruce); Mary Queen of Scots’ house in Jedburgh; Traquair, the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, and the Roman camp of Trimontium.
Other activities in the area include horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and mountain biking, all within 30 minutes’ drive. Good selection of pubs and restaurants locally.
As well as holidays and weekend breaks, we also cater for family gatherings, anniversaries, weddings and any other celebrations with accommodation for larger parties. For group, corporate and party bookings, a bar and catering are available by arrangement. An initial grocery order service is available on request. Late 16th century Ardbrecknish House is in a magnificent Highland setting with wonderful views of mountains and glens. These attractive holiday properties are set amid 20 acres of mature woodland close to beautiful Loch Awe - 26 miles long and Britain’s longest freshwater loch. A whole host of indoor and outdoor amenities are available on site, and although the setting is quiet and peaceful, it is within easy reach of restaurants, shops, golf courses, and the small village of Kilmartin Glen and museum, the richest area in Europe for prehistoric remains, making these properties an ideal holiday location and a perfect touring base. A visitors’ reception/library area provides a wealth of information on the local history, archaeology, wildlife, gardens, forest and hillside walks, as well as the year-round activities available around Argyll and the West Highlands.
The Ardbrecknish Room has a welcoming open fire, small dance floor, pool table, darts and Scottish Carpet Bowls. The adjoining cosy traditional bar with its woodburner provides a perfect way to end the day; perhaps sampling one or two of the many malt whiskies.
At the shore, just 10 minutes’ walk, motor boats, rowing boats and canoes can be hired to explore the enchanting islands and ruined castles of the loch, or maybe fishing the loch for salmon, char, monster pike and brown trout. A British record brown trout of 31lbs 10oz was caught in March 2002. Tuition and/or a fishing guide is available by arrangement.
The surrounding area offers a wealth of interest and fantastic scenery. Opposite Ardbrecknish is majestic Ben Cruachan, and further north are the impressive Glen Coe and Ben Nevis ranges, a mecca for hill walkers all year round. Both regions have ski centres and within an hour’s drive is the busy town of Oban, ‘Gateway to the Isles’, from where modern ferries take you to Mull and Iona, the cradle of Christianity, Staffa, the inspiration for Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave Overture, and to other Hebridean gems. Oban has a sea life centre and an excellent golf course. The elegant town of Inveraray on Loch Fyne only 12 miles away, to the south is the Crinan Canal with its stepped locks, you can walk or drive a delightful route along its 9-mile length. Family-friendly bar and restaurant on site.
