This part of Provence, the hilly backdrop to the coastal strip, makes Fayence a perfect base for exploring the region as it is within easy reach of the towns, villages and beaches of the Côte d’Azur such as Fréjus, Saint-Raphaël and Cannes. La Garde-Adhémar is a listed ’most beautiful village of France’, one of the best preserved medieval villages in the region, and has a great deal of character with significant parts of its original defensive ramparts. The highlight of the village is the lovely 12th century Roman-style church with octagonal tower. The pretty village of Grignan is dominated by a large 12th century château. Also in Grignan, look out for the 19th century Fontaine Sévigné on the Place de l’horologue or the belfry built in 1600. Saint Montan also has a hill top castle, accessed via the maze of narrow streets with character buildings. Or at the bottom of the village is a small river with a few shops and restaurants. A village best explored on foot as some of the streets are inaccessible in a car. Children of all ages will love the crocodile farm nearby.
