An abundance of wildflowers, birds and butterflies can be enjoyed in the Nature Reserves at Barlow Common, Skipwith and Derwent Valley. RSPB experts run guided walks around Fairburn Ings, 10 miles, and events including family fun days are organised throughout the year.
Medieval York is just 17 miles away, with easy access to the city from the designer outlet park and ride, 15 miles. Hull with its futuristic aquarium, Leeds and the Royal Armouries and the elegant spa town of Harrogate are all within an hour’s drive. Irton Hall is a stunning holiday location with impressive history, set in the foothills of the Western fells of the Lake District between Wasdale and Eskdale. Parts of the magnificent hall, such as the Pele Tower, date from the 14th century. The Pele Tower (ref 25366) creates a totally unique holiday venue on four floors featuring spacious rooms with beams, sandstone walls and an original stone spiral staircase from top to bottom of the tower. The third floor family bedroom and en-suite are accessed via this spiral staircase; the other floors have additional standard staircase access, whilst the first floor living room has a leisure area with pool table. Broughton House (ref 24374) forms the west wing of Irton Hall, where spacious elegant rooms, chandeliers and a grand staircase with stained glass windows make this a dream holiday venue. A pool table in the living room and wi-fi access enhance the excellent facilities available. The Clock Tower (ref 24587) is a wonderful original stone detached building behind the main hall with a modern interior, including 4 shower rooms and a spacious family living area with patio doors opening onto a private decked area. Set beside the main hall, Lamplugh (ref 25507) is a delightful, semi-detached holiday cottage with spacious rooms looking out over grounds, having its own private sitting-out area and freedom to roam the nature trails within the woods. Lingard Cottage (ref 26257) is a semi-detached cottage to the side of the main hall and has its own entrance hall and French doors to sitting-out area. Ormondroyd Cottage (ref 26258) is also a semi-detached cottage to the side of the main hall with its own entrance hall and French doors from the living room to a small balcony overlooking open countryside.
Both Oliver Cromwell and Henry VI visited the hall, although it is reputed that Henry VI was refused entry and spent the night under the 1000 year old oak tree in front of the house, known as ‘The King’s Oak’.
Surrounded by 19 acres of natural parkland where children can play to their hearts’ content and guests may wander and explore the natural habitats of abundant wildlife in the grounds. A short drive will bring you to wide sandy beaches, the Eskdale miniature steam railway at Ravenglass and Muncaster Castle and Gardens which also house the unique International Owl Sanctuary. The Langdales are to the east, accessed via the Hard Knott Pass and Wrynose Pass, whilst Wasdale and Wastwater with their amazing views of Great Gable and Scafell Pike are 5 miles away. Ideally situated at the heart of the western Lake District, many lakes are within easy reach such as Ennerdale Water, Crummock Water and Buttermere, whether to stroll along the banks and watch the reflection of the drifting clouds in the Lakes, or expend some energy climbing the rugged hills to admire the stunning views from the top - the choices are endless. Set on a working farm in the peaceful hamlet of Oxwick, Manor Farm is only 12 miles from Holkham, with its lovely expanse of sandy beach. The impressive farmhouse (Property ref AAE), boasting two spacious living rooms, is very well furnished and equipped and stands in its own half-acre of lawned gardens. A miniature railway or a pleasant walk along the embankment, takes visitors to the sandy beach (1¼ miles). There is a large boating lagoon for canoes and dinghies, as well as sailing, tennis, and riding locally. Close by are Walsingham Abbey grounds, containing the famous Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham and the remains of an Augustinian priory.
Less than an hour away lies Norwich, one of the finest of England’s provincial capitals. For the visitor, there is a wealth of history, fine architecture, excellent shopping, art, museums and leisure activities. The Norman castle dominates the town and now houses a museum, while the magnificent cathedral boasts some of Britain’s best Gothic architecture. There are cobbled streets, quiet alleys and courtyards, lively shopping centres, plenty of good inns and restaurants, as well as excellent art galleries and museums.
