The cottages form part of the Graythwaite Estate, which has been in the same family since the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and remained intact as a large working estate throughout four centuries. The farmstead, from which the cottages have been formed, was built in 1890 and its position was chosen at a time when the popularity of the Lake District was just beginning to rise in wealthy Victorian circles. Thus the tranquillity and beauty which first captivated visitors to this area can still be enjoyed in heavenly surroundings where peace reigns supreme.
Visitors are well placed to explore the extraordinary and dramatic scenery for which the Lakes are so famous. Hilltop Farm at Near Sawrey, the cottage where Beatrix Potter’s imagination was stirred to create Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck, is just 4 miles away. At Hawkshead (4 miles) there is a gallery dedicated to her original drawings and illustrations. Within 10 miles are Rydal Fell, Rydal Water, Grasmere and the cottage of the poet who made them famous and brought the Lake District to the attention of the world, William Wordsworth.
The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway (4 miles) runs through the valley of the River Leven; its trains connect with a leisurely steamer going to the busy, cosmopolitan town of Bowness-on-Windermere. The steamer also wends its way further north to Waterhead, the stop for the pretty little town of Ambleside. Shops 4 miles, pubs 3 miles.

It has often been said that Rosecraddoc Manor must be the nearest thing to paradise. The Manor and the Coach House have been tastefully and sympathetically restored to please the most discerning guest. Old Monmouth Ref: DVP

Dating back to 1630 - when it was originally established as a coaching inn - Old Monmouth lies in the heart of the popular seaside resort of Lyme Regis and forms one of a row of properties, just 100 yards from the seafront. Old Monmouth has endured a chequered history with Monmouth’s cavalry lodging there in 1685, being visited by Oscar Wilde in 1891 and used by the Americans as a HQ during the war. This unique property is an excellent holiday home to enjoy Lyme Regis with its famous Cobb, beach, shops and cafes, and also to explore the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site. There is superb scenery, coastal walking, golf and fishing on the doorstep, and within easy driving distance are Bridport, Charmouth, Beer, Seaton and Sidmouth. Weymouth, with its Deep Sea Adventure, Timewalk and many other attractions also makes for a good family visit. There are a host of National Trust properties to visit, as well as Forde Abbey and Gardens - whilst inland, the Yeovilton Air Museum, the Haynes Motor Museum, Sherborne Castle and much more provide alternative days out. The Vicarage Ref: LTP

Down a quiet leafy lane in beautiful countryside just 2 miles from the shores of Coniston Water , this very spacious and attractive, traditional Lakeland house is set in its own private garden. The market town of Ulverston (5 miles) offers a choice of shops, inns and restaurants, a championship golf course with superb views over Morecambe Bay, an excellent sports complex with swimming-pool and a Laurel and Hardy museum (Stan Laurel was born in the town). Many activities can be enjoyed in the immediate vicinity, including walking on fell, lakeside or mountain, sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing. The shores of Morecambe Bay are just 2½ miles away, where sea fishing is available. At the Grizedale Forest Enterprise Centre (4 miles), mountain bikes can be hired to cycle along the many forest trails which link the majority of the numerous stone and wood sculptures scattered among the trees. Kendal, the ‘Gateway to the Lakes’, is well worth a visit for its museums, art galleries and pretty cafés and tearooms. The nearby Levens Hall boasts beautifully trimmed topiary gardens as well as a steam-engine collection and café. Lake Windermere 20 minutes’ drive with Bowness a further 10 minutes.
