The county of Yorkshire has a lot to offer visitors with a varied landscape of dales, moors and coast, a rich historical heritage, fascinating cities, market towns and picturesque villages. Yorkshire has a very distinctive character and is rightly considered one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

Once you arrive in Yorkshire you'll see why it's called 'God's Own County'. Take for example the wild, beautiful expanse of the Yorkshire Dales, which actually consists of lots of different Dales each with their own unique character, covering in total some 554 square miles of heather moorland, rich pasture land, and characterful Dale's villages and of course dry stone walls. Much of this area is protected and forms the famous Dales National Park; the perfect place for walking and cycling amongst some of Britain's most stunning landscapes.

To the east is another National Park; The North York Moors National Park extends all the way to the Yorkshire coast. This is a place of wide open spaces and wind swept heather moorland, an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways as well as hidden valleys where you'll discover pretty villages. It's also home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam railway which runs from Pickering to Whitby (and back) and is a great day out for both adults and children.

The Yorkshire coast has been attracting holidaymakers since Victorian times and is renowned for its pretty fishing villages and bustling coastal resorts such as Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Here you'll find family friendly clean sandy beaches and plenty of activities for visitors of all ages. The picturesque town of Whitby clusters around its fishing harbour where fishing boats and pleasure cruisers come and go. High above the town Whitby Abbey dominated the skyline and can be reached with a vigorous walk up some 199 steps.

To the south are the family resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Scarborough has two lovely horseshoe bays with golden sands and plenty to offer families and couples looking for a traditional seaside break. Filey and Bridlington also have lovely beaches and coastal promenades.

And there's plenty more to Yorkshire including the wonderfully historical city of York, internationally renowned for its medieval architecture that includes one of the finest buildings in Europe; York Minster. Then there's the Yorkshire Wolds; a quiet and peaceful place of undulating countryside and market towns. To the south of the region in West Yorkshire is Bronte Country and its dramatic brooding open moorlands and of course connections with the Bronte sisters.

City of York 26 miles. .Castle Howard, setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited, Nunnington Hall (NT), Duncombe Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few treasures to discover. York offers the majestic minster, the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum, and excellent shopping facilities. On the east coast lie Scarborough and Bridlington, the picturesque fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, and Staithes, and the fascinating old port of Whitby, with its Captain Cook connections, as well as 3 miles of sandy beaches and a colourful harbour, while the popular resort of Scarborough is 17 miles away offering excellent shopping and family entertainment. Closer to home visitors can enjoy free use of Pickering’s swimming-pool, just 3 minutes’ walk away, good cycling in Dalby Forest (bikes can be hired in Pickering), as well as forest walks, fishing, pony trekking and golf. THE CHARACTER OF HUNGATE
The cottages have been converted with great flair by the owners, Mike and Sue Kitching, from the outbuildings of Hungate House. The delightful setting includes eight secluded gardens, courtyards and an orchard, as well as a safe, enclosed play area for children. Each cottage retains much character, with old stone arches, fireplaces and beams carefully retained. Immaculately maintained, warm, clean and superbly well-equipped, these cottages are truly a ‘home from home’. No wonder so many visitors return time and again. The owners provide plenty of helpful information on the huge choice of places to visit, as well as menus from the local restaurants. Visitors have unlimited free use of Pickering’s swimming pool, 1 free multi-entry car pass to Dalby Forest (two passes with Hungate Garden Cottage - ICH), free entry to Eden Camp, an exciting children’s adventure playground, and free entry to Ryedale Folk Musem. Free entry for Eden Camp and Ryedale Folk Museum are only applicable for stays of 7 nights or more.
Hungate is best summed up by a visitor who wrote, "There was nothing more we could have wished for in a holiday home. We loved the fire, the free logs and little touches such as fresh flowers – it felt like home. The children loved the freedom of the gardens and could not wait to get home from our excursions! We loved coming and going through the heavy black gate into an oasis in this nice town."

A meandering stream trickles through the stunning landscaped gardens of this 150-year-old detached farmhouse. Nestling in the sleepy hamlet of Barmby Moor (there may be some noise from farm traffic) and set in its own grounds, the property also boasts an outdoor swimming pool and outdoor 6-seater hot tub. Just under a mile away lies Allerthorpe Common which offers wonderful walks and picnic areas amidst thousands of well kept acres of land. This truly is the perfect holiday location for getting away from it all or discovering local culture.
Scattered amongst the spectacular countryside are many picturesque villages and ancient market towns such as Pocklington, Howden and Driffield. Beverley, capital of the Wolds, is home to a beautiful Gothic minster, old buildings and a racecourse. Described as a jewel waiting to be discovered, the Yorkshire Wolds boast countless villages, ancient inns and historic houses. Burnby Hall Gardens, Burton Agnes Hall and Burton Constable are all close by. Three miles away in Barmby Moor, the Wolds Gliding Club offers trial flights all year round.
Four miles away is the Buddhist Centre at the wonderful Georgian mansion of Kilnwick Percy Hall, which offers lessons and courses in meditation. Aircraft enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with the Real Aeroplane Museum (Selby, 25 miles) where a magnificent Hawker Hurricane and P-51 Mustang can be seen, and the Yorkshire Air Museum (Elvington, 5 miles) with a superb collection of pre- and post-WWII aircraft. The ancient walled city of York is only 12 miles away, and boasts plenty of attractions for all the family, including the Castle Museum, York Dungeons, National Railway Museum, York Racecourse and the famous Jorvik Viking Centre. West of Wharfedale, the limestone features of Malhamdale attract many visitors – Malham Cove, Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar acting as the magnets. Consisting of a sheer escarpment, crowned by a fractured pavement, there are also waterfalls and dry valleys to take in whilst walking in this awe-inspiring area. The traditional market towns of Skipton (with its well-preserved medieval castle) and Hawes (with Wensleydale Creamery and Ropemakers Museum) both make for pleasant days out.
