Founded in 1071 by the Normans, the town is dominated by the mighty castle and keep that has been a landmark for centuries. A Georgian cobbled marketplace is at the heart of the town, and in the pretty surrounding streets, you will find every modern convenience you could wish for close to you holiday cottage. There is a plethora of excellent shops, high-end restaurants and traditional tearooms catering to every taste, watched over by the dreaming spire of the Church of the Holy Trinity that rises from the centre.

The surrounding North Yorkshire countryside truly is a walker's paradise, with in excess of 10,000km of public rights of way that wend up hill and down dale through areas of outstanding natural beauty. There is no shortage of things to see and do, and a visit to the castle is a must, with its interactive exhibitions, pretty gardens and extensive ruins to explore. Hardy souls may wish to join one of the regular ghost walks around the cobbled streets after dark, and there is an impressive number of historic sites and family-friendly destinations within easy reach.

Situated in the quiet village of Newsham, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, this is a wonderful base to really explore and get to know the local area. Walkers and cyclists are drawn to the area, with many established footpaths, bridleways, and cycle paths that lead through the village and further beyond into the magnificent countryside of North Yorkshire. The local pub is only a short walk away and offers good quality food and local produce. Perfect for a day trip are the National Trust properties; located within a 10 mile radius are Moulton Hall and Braithwaite Hall whilst Eggleston Abbey, Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Bowes Castle, Raby Castle can all be reached within a 15 mile radius, and offer guests the chance to explore some of the many historic attractions of the area. Teesdale and the famous High Force waterfall is also a popular attraction in the area. Richmond is just 7 miles away with its castle and golf course, and offers top quality restaurants, pubs, tea shops, cafés and bistros, or visit the weekly market, monthly farmers’ market, or the Georgian Theatre Royal. Barnard Castle has a golf course, which is 7 miles away, and Catterick Racecourse just 10 miles away for guests who enjoy a sporting occasion. Local farm shops within a 3 mile radius. The Coach House Ref: KTN

The ancient town of Richmond, at the gateway to Swaledale, has an unfinished 11th-century castle and an excellent market place. The town is a hive of activity, offering a theatre, shops, inns, restaurants and a host of other town amenities. A riverside footpath leads gently to Easby Abbey, with some parts still remaining. Other historic and religious sites in the area include Bolton Castle, Jervaulx Abbey and Coverham Abbey. Within driving distance are Scotch Corner and Catterick (once the home to a Roman camp), and Kiplin Hall is well worth a visit. Ripon is home to Fountains Abbey, Britain’s largest and most beautiful monastic ruin which has the added bonus of being the focal point of Studley Royal, an 18th-century landscaped garden complete with lake, temples, water garden and deer park. The scenic splendour of the Dales is easily accessible, providing good walking, cycling and riding terrain.
A little further afield are the bustling Tyne towns of Newcastle and Durham, both excellent for their great shops, markets, restaurants and bars. Durham is also famous for its majestic 12th-century cathedral, medieval castle and university – the third oldest in England. Below the castle and cathedral are the wooded banks of the River Wear, where riverside walks can be enjoyed, passing a succession of elegant bridges with fine vantage points over the town.
