Founded in 1071 by the Normans, the town is dominated by the mighty castle and keep that has been a landmark for centuries. There is a plethora of excellent shops, high-end restaurants and traditional tearooms catering to every taste, watched over by the dreaming spire of the Church of the Holy Trinity that rises from the centre.
The surrounding North Yorkshire countryside truly is a walker's paradise, with in excess of 10,000km of public rights of way that wend up hill and down dale through areas of outstanding natural beauty. There is no shortage of things to see and do, and a visit to the castle is a must, with its interactive exhibitions, pretty gardens and extensive ruins to explore. Hardy souls may wish to join one of the regular ghost walks around the cobbled streets after dark, and there is an impressive number of historic sites and family-friendly destinations within easy reach.
