The Auction Mart is a definite must-see to experience the livestock sales that form the backbone of the farming economy.

The best way to explore this region is by foot, with routes leaving from the town centre in all directions. First stop is the famous Leyburn Shawl, a pinewood ridge offering extensive views across the rolling hills of Wensleydale. From here, it is possible to walk to Bolton Castle, an exceptionally well preserved medieval castle. Indeed, many of the best historical landmarks are within walking distance, which makes getting around a breeze.

Railway enthusiasts can take a ride on the heritage Wensleydale Railway for the popular scenic route to Redmire, or hop on the Wensleydale Vintage bus for a unique way to travel between the country towns. There are some fabulous Dales tearooms, such as Warlands in Leyburn, where you can to sample some very local home-cooked food, including the all-important Wensleydale cheese sandwich.
