Walkers and cyclists will enjoy Sussex. This is great walking country or you could grab a bike and take to the network of quiet country roads. A boat trip is another great way to enjoy the scenery from a different aspect, take a leisurely cruise from Eastbourne to the lighthouse and discover a tranquil place to breathe.

You'll find holiday cottages located within easy reach of all the region's well known attractions and beauty spots both inland and at the coast and there's an abundance of Blue Flag awarded beaches scattered along the coast. For a really atmospheric look at the coastline head to Beachy Head with its dramatic chalk cliffs, and make the time to stroll through one of the picturesque fishing harbours dotted around to pick up unique souvenirs and fresh seafood.

Places of interest of course include the vibrant coastal towns of Brighton, with its famous pier, Eastbourne and Bognor Regis as well as the delightful spa town of Tunbridge Wells (actually just over the Kent border) and lovely market towns like Horsham and historic Lewes.

If there's one thing you can't escape in Sussex, its history and the famous battle site of 1066 in Hastings holds a wealth of it, and offers a family friendly day out to explore one of history's most important events. Similarly Arundel Castle could also be on your agenda; it sits majestically above the roof tops of the town below and is bursting at the seams with stories and relics.

For family fun, visit one of the county's many animal parks; Drusillas Park at Alfriston is a paradise of small exotic animals or there's the Ashdown Forest Llama Park, home to more than 100 llamas and Fishers Farm Park is great for getting the younger ones moving. The Blue Reef Aquarium at Hastings and Brighton Sealife Centre are the ultimate way to experience underworld treasures without getting your feet wet.

In a most beautiful setting, amid 150-acre parkland grounds, and with two acres of formal garden complete with sole use of swimming pool and tennis court, this gracious country manor house offers a warm and characterful retreat (owner retains a service wing for private use). With origins in the 12th-century, the present house was built in 1616 and is full of period features and furniture, such as original fireplaces, 16th and 17th-century wood panelling, Tudor rose ceilings and a grand staircase with twisted balustrade dating from 1682. The themed bedrooms, intimate reception rooms and dining room combine to make it an ideal holiday choice for family celebrations and get-togethers. The surrounding area is steeped in history, with Sissinghurst Castle, Penshurst Place, Hever Castle, Chartwell (Churchill’s home) and the moated splendour of Leeds Castle all beckoning exploration. Golf, fishing, horse riding and hunting can all be arranged locally. Etchingham Railway Station is
15-minute walk, or 3 minutes by car, for rapid access to local places of interest, and the sites and sounds of the capital can be accessed in around an hour and a half. Shops 2 miles.

Alternatively, Bodiam Castle can be visited by taking a gentle boat trip or, more traditionally, by car. The village features the Church of St Mary’s which dates back to 1090, and the Great Dixter Tudor House and Gardens are just 0.25 miles away. There are many places to explore including Hawkhurst, Sandhurst, Beckley and a little further afield are Hastings, Tenterden and Camber Sands.
