In the delightful Friston Forest village of Westdean, these carefully converted Grade II listed barns with exposed beams date back to 1597 and are double award winning (award for excellent conversion of a 16thC listed ox barn). Now a Christmas tree and apple juice farm it was once owned by Alfred the Great. Free archaeology and history tour available for guests. Recent excavations revealed that the site had Neolithic occupation circa 2700BC, and an Elizabethan terrace and Jacobean banqueting house, the centre of a wider holding mentioned in Domesday Book which stretched from the River Cuckmere to Jevington. There are also ruins of an Elizabethan manor house, restored 14th century dovecote and ox farmyard of the 18th and 19th century. Quebec Barn (ref 26956) was used as local headquarters by Canadian forces in WW ll. Walking plus cycle trails (hire centre, ½ mile). Seven Sisters Country Park, 1 mile, and a secluded beach 1½ miles. A good base to enjoy this lovely area

Only 200 yards from Gildredge Park bowling greens and tennis courts, ½ mile from the town centre and railway station, these spacious and elegant holiday apartments with period features in a fine Victorian house are ideal centres from which to enjoy all aspects of a really varied holiday. McSweeney (ref 3536) and Prideaux (ref 3537) have a feature marble fireplace. Eastbourne is a fine town with a Victorian pier and excellent theatres hosting national productions both musical and dramatic at the Devonshire Park and Congress Theatres. Easily reached by road via M25 and A22 and is 1½ hours by train from London. There is also an International Tennis Tournament at Devonshire Park and County Cricket at the Saffrons Sports ground, all of these venues are within walking distance of the property. The Bluebell Steam Railway and Filching Manor Motor Museum are a short drive and the South Downs are close by for walking enthusiasts.
Eastbourne now has a Marina and harbour village and there is also a fine swimming and leisure pool. Two excellent golf courses are within 1 mile, with horse riding 10 minutes drive. Sailing, windsurfing and fishing are available from the beach. Day trips to France operate from Newhaven 12 miles away. Shops and pub a short walk.
