At the time of the Norman Conquests Hastings was a small fishing and trading port; today it consists of the Old Town with half-timbered houses and narrow passageways, a bustling town centre and the elegant St. Leonards district with its antique shops and galleries. To learn more about the town's history visit The Fisherman's Museum and the Maritime Museum.

There are numerous seafood restaurants in this seafaring town and a fantastic fish market, to see some more unusual marine life; pay a call at Blue Reef Aquarium. You can see Hastings' heritage come to life at Smugglers Adventure in St Clements Caves and below, is Pelham Beach.

For a heathland hike, head for Hastings Country Park,which can be reached by the East Hill Lift, the steepest funicular railway in Britain. To glimpse Hastings past visit Yesterday's World; this attraction is home to more than 10,000 genuine historical artefacts and you can wander through Victorian streets or revisit the psychedelic seventies. If history is your thing, you can visit the castle, the museum and even go on an Old Town Ghost Walk.

Just outside Hastings, you'll find historic Winchelsea where you can book on a 'cellar tour'! There are 56 medieval cellars in Winchelsea, built in the 13th Century and used mainly to service the wine trade with Gascony. You might even be lucky enough to be in Hastings during the annual re-enactment of its famous Battle, where there'll also be authentic period crafts and living history encampments.

The unspoilt shingle beach, about a mile away, is good for rock pooling and fossil hunting. It is also a haven for birds and there is a public hide at Pannel Valley Nature Reserve near Pett Level. The sandy beach and dunes at Camber are a short drive away. Also nearby are the picturesque village of Winchelsea and the medieval town of Rye with its many antique shops, tea rooms, historic inns, fine restaurants, and 12th-century tower. Here there is also a museum housing a number of relics from Rye’s past, and a lovely art gallery that houses temporary exhibitions by local artists as well as a small permanent collection of works by artists associated with Rye.
This a popular holiday place all year round with plenty of sites to visit locally, including Battle with its abbey ruins, Hastings with its 1066 links and smugglers’ caves, and Tenterden with its steam railway. There are also many National Trust houses and beautiful gardens within easy reach, including Bodiam Castle, Smallhythe Place and Batemans. Ashford, 30 miles away, offers day trips to France by Eurostar. Alternatively there is a ferry crossing at Dover. There are many scenic walks in the area, both coastal and inland, and it is common to see ramblers in the village, mostly heading for the popular pub!
