Eastbourne is a fine town with a Victorian pier and excellent theatres hosting national productions both musical and dramatic at the Devonshire Park and Congress Theatres. Easily reached by road via M25 and A22 and is 1½ hours by train from London. There is also an International Tennis Tournament at Devonshire Park and County Cricket at the Saffrons Sports ground, all of these venues are within walking distance of the property. The Bluebell Steam Railway and Filching Manor Motor Museum are a short drive and the South Downs are close by for walking enthusiasts.
Eastbourne now has a Marina and harbour village and there is also a fine swimming and leisure pool. Two excellent golf courses are within 1 mile, with horse riding 10 minutes drive. Just half a mile from the nearest beach and a 15-minute stroll to Brixham town, Hurst Stone East Cottage was built around the 15th century and retains many of the original features, including beams, window seats, an open fire and two staircases, with an east wing and west wing. Brixham is an old fishing port and has numerous seafood restaurants. Take a boat trip over to Torquay and visit the theatre, or explore Living Coasts, where penguins wander freely. Brixham forms the third part of Torbay, the other parts being Torquay and Paignton. The bay is known as the English Riviera because of its unique micro-climate, and Brixham shares this mild climate. South Devon’s two cities are Exeter and Plymouth, both are within easy driving distance, approximately 30 miles, and offer their own tourist attractions, historical buildings and shops. Dartmoor is breathtakingly beautiful, at once romantic, mysterious, wild and eerie. Visit the tourist spots, or experienced walkers and navigators can explore the depths of Dartmoor. See wild Dartmoor ponies, cross ancient stone bridges spanning the clear, bubbling waters of the river Dart and other rivers, and feel the somewhat eerie presence of the Tors, seven rocky hills which preside majestically over the moors. Dartmouth is the neighbouring town to Brixham, situated on and across the mouth of the River Dart. Take the ferry (car and passenger) across to Dartmouth. Whilst waiting for the ferry, look across to Dartmouth at the Britannia Royal Navy College. Located on a hill above the river, it glints in the sunshine, a splendid backdrop for the river estuary, with its many sailing boats, naval boats and pleasure cruisers. Look to the mouth of the river and see two castles, those of Kingswear and Dartmouth, true fairytale castles guarding the mouth, with the rocky waters of the estuary lapping at their feet. Don’t forget to visit Agatha Christie’s home, Greenway, which was for many years her summer residence and now open to the public. As well, there are many National Trust properties to explore.
