Begin your visit to Somerset by exploring some of the area's rich heritage, starting off with the enigmatic Glastonbury Tor. Sitting high above the land like a beacon, it holds stories of the legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. At the base of the Tor lie the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, set in 36 acres of beautiful parkland and ponds it's the perfect destination for a family day out. There's an abundance of historical places in the region so take the time to explore as many as possible, especially Wells Cathedral and the Roman Baths and its museum.

If you can tear yourself away from exploring Somerset's past there's a lot more to explore. Longleat Safari Park is just one of the many animal attractions in the area, but you can also get up close and personal with magnificent shire horses birds of prey and marine life.

There are some great natural wonders to explore and with its steep inclines, dramatic peaks and amazing views, Cheddar Gorge makes an ideal location for walkers, climbers, cavers and sightseers alike. Set in a spectacular location on the northern slopes of Exmoor National Park, a few hundred yards from the coast and with views of the Bristol Channel, Yenworthy Farm is situated in ‘Doone Country’, and actually appears in the novel itself. The gun which was supposedly used to repel the ‘Doones’ still hangs in the farmhouse to this day. This working farm once had its own mill and the old water wheel can still be seen. Two traditional barns in the courtyard of the farm have been sympathetically converted to offer a very high standard of accommodation throughout.
Yenworthy is ideal for walkers - a rugged pathway leads from the farm down to a secluded beach and there is direct access to one of the most scenic sections of the South West Coast Path. There are 13 miles of footpaths to explore on the farm itself and it even has its own historic monument - an old Roman Fort at Old Burrow. A haven for wildlife, it has four Sites of Special Scientific Interest and rare species of butterflies and trees. The nearest sandy beach is Lee Abbey (5 miles) and there are excellent surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton within easy driving distance. There are three pubs with restaurants within 3 miles and plenty of shops in Lynton and Lynmouth
(4 miles), Polock (7 miles), Minehead (13 miles) and Barnstaple (21 miles), which also has a popular covered market. River fishing and grazing for horses are available by arrangement. Shops 4 miles.

Also within walking distance are the romantic villages of Bossington, Selworthy, Allerford and bustling Porlock for year-round needs, as well as Minehead’s farmers’ market. There is surfing at Lynmouth or beyond to Croyde and Woolacombe, and golf at Minehead or the fine course at Saunton for a true test. Horse riding is available for all abilities and entertainment for both children and adults at Lynch Farm and Tropicaria further on. There are also glorious walks, of course, to hidden treasures such as Culbone Church, Butlins at Minehead or Dunster Castle if activities such as outdoor meals, table tennis, croquet and messing about with balls at West Lynch does not suffice. Set in the pretty National Trust hamlet of Luccombe, situated between Minehead and Porlock, the cottages are set in the grounds of an impressive former rectory. Internally the cottages have all the modern convenience one might expect and the cottages are surrounded by the well-maintained grounds of the main house. The comfortable beds, well-fitted kitchens and inviting living space make these cottages a must for anyone wanting something a little bit special for their holiday. Besides plenty of walking from the front door, the cottages are ideally positioned to go out and explore the varied and stunning landscape on offer as well as many attractions. There is superb scenery and walking on the South West Coastal Path or inland on Exmoor to places like Tarr Steps and the village of Withypool. Visit the Victorian villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, famous for the Watersmeet Gorge (NT), Valley of the Rocks and the venicular cliff railway. Looking towards Minehead, there is the promenade to enjoy as well as a good array of shops and other amenities. The West Somerset Railway is worth a visit for those with an interest in stream engines. Dunster Castle (NT) and village, with its beautiful terraced gardens, deer park and mill will make for an interesting day out as well as Porlock Weir where a pub lunch can be enjoyed overlooking the sea. Just over the other side of the A39 is the National Trust village of Selworthy with its renowned tea room. There are beaches at Dunster and Blue Anchor for all to enjoy.
