Begin your visit to Somerset by exploring some of the area's rich heritage, starting off with the enigmatic Glastonbury Tor. Sitting high above the land like a beacon, it holds stories of the legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. At the base of the Tor lie the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, set in 36 acres of beautiful parkland and ponds it's the perfect destination for a family day out. There's an abundance of historical places in the region so take the time to explore as many as possible, especially Wells Cathedral and the Roman Baths and its museum.

If you can tear yourself away from exploring Somerset's past there's a lot more to explore. Longleat Safari Park is just one of the many animal attractions in the area, but you can also get up close and personal with magnificent shire horses birds of prey and marine life.

From the open expanses of gardens and ancient oak woodlands to sparkling rivers and sandy beaches, Somerset is a haven for lovers of the great outdoors. There are some great natural wonders to explore and with its steep inclines, dramatic peaks and amazing views, Cheddar Gorge makes an ideal location for walkers, climbers, cavers and sightseers alike. Lazy afternoon picnics can be enjoyed, and there's a superb selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes cooking up fresh local produce so you can take a night off from cooking. Set in a secluded position high in the Mendips above Cheddar Gorge and just 3 miles from Cheddar, these three attractive barn conversions make an excellent base for walkers and nature lovers. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is rich in bird and wildlife, including badgers and deer (which visit the farm). Animals on the farm include calves, pygmy goats, alpacas and guinea pigs. Nature trails criss-cross the surrounding hills, easily accessible from the farm, and the whole area is one of immense historical and geological interest.
Among the many places of interest to visit are Wells cathedral in England’s smallest city, Glastonbury Tor, the caves at Cheddar and Wookey, Longleat and several NT properties including Montacute House and Stourhead and King John’s Hunting Lodge in pretty Axbridge. Excellent beaches and seaside entertainment can be enjoyed at Weston Super Mare and Brean, and there are many charming villages to be explored, along with the rugged landscape of Exmoor National Park, famous for the native ponies. The Georgian Heritage city of Bath is easily reached with its beautiful architecture, Roman Baths, Abbey and fine selection of shops and restaurants. Several golf clubs are available locally together with horse riding, coarse fishing and trout fishing at Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes. Very good local inns and places to eat.

These attractive holiday cottages have been carefully renovated from former barns, and have kept many of their original features including exposed stonework. They enjoy a perfect location on the banks of the River Avon, and on the edge of the picturesque village of Bathampton, which is 2 miles from the centre of Bath. Designated as a World Heritage Site, Bath presents some of the finest architectural sights in Europe, such as the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge. At the heart of the city next to Bath Abbey is the Roman Baths, which gives a fascinating look into the Roman bathing complex. There is a good variety of museums and galleries, including the American Museum and the Jane Austen Centre. Festivals, theatre and street entertainment bring life and excitement to this vibrant city, and the Thermae Bath Spa with rooftop pool is a popular attraction.
