The town dates back to the Norman times and combines traditional architecture with modern facilities including a good choice of shops high street and independent shops that sell specialist and local produce, entertainment and places to eat and drink.

The Taunton Heritage tour is a fascinating guided walk through the some of the town's most iconic buildings. Highlights include the Somerset Museum and the remains of the castle, the Cider press garden and two churches; St James, which dates back to medieval times and St Mary Magdalene, which originated in the 12th century.
