At the heart of the West Country, Somerset's rolling hills, deep gorges and flowing rivers tell the tales of myths and legends.

From castles, abbeys and museums, to classic English houses and gardens, this is rural England at its best, and with such a wide range of things to see and do, a cottage holiday here provides the perfect base from which to explore the area.

Begin your visit to Somerset by exploring some of the area's rich heritage, starting off with the enigmatic Glastonbury Tor. Sitting high above the land like a beacon, it holds stories of the legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. At the base of the Tor lie the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, set in 36 acres of beautiful parkland and ponds it's the perfect destination for a family day out. There's an abundance of historical places in the region so take the time to explore as many as possible, especially Wells Cathedral and the Roman Baths and its museum.

If you can tear yourself away from exploring Somerset's past there's a lot more to explore. Longleat Safari Park is just one of the many animal attractions in the area, but you can also get up close and personal with magnificent shire horses birds of prey and marine life.

From the open expanses of gardens and ancient oak woodlands to sparkling rivers and sandy beaches, Somerset is a haven for lovers of the great outdoors. Lazy afternoon picnics can be enjoyed, and there's a superb selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes cooking up fresh local produce so you can take a night off from cooking. You could even make a night of it and go see a show at the 17th century Theatre Royal in Bath.

This spectacular accommodation was constructed in 1821 as the brewing hall of a former brewery supplying around 14 pubs in Freshford, of which only one remains today. The Brewery ceased production in the 1890s and tragically fell into disrepair for the next 60 years. It then had a diverse range of uses in the 20th century from a paper store to an air raid shelter for the local school during WWII. In the 1970s Jeremy Fry, of Fry’s Turkish Delight fame, came to the rescue and converted it into a private home. Princess Margaret was a good friend of Jeremy Fry and visited the brewery regularly, bringing with her a highly visible police presence, as well as tending the gardens – she even left impressions from her high heels on the leather floor! During this time The Vaults was used as a wheelchair factory business established by Jeremy Fry and his good friend Lord Snowdon. It has since been transformed into a unique listed property providing spacious holiday accommodation for up to 4 guests. There is a sleeping area at each end of the huge living space and original features, such as the magnificent stone barrel-vaulted ceiling and natural stone walls have been retained, yet it exudes a modern ambience and is beautifully furnished throughout.
Its glorious architecture, central village location and added luxury of a 5ft four-poster bed make this property one not to be missed. Freshford village lies in the heart of a conservation area in an AONB and is within walking distance of the medieval church and village pub, which hosts events throughout the year. Boasting some fascinating Georgian architecture as well as beautiful canal and riverside walks, Freshford makes a perfect base for your holiday in Somerset. The railway station in the village serves Bradford-on-Avon as well as other towns and villages including the Georgian World Heritage city of Bath just 6 miles away. Bath will keep you busy all day with its grand cathedral, Roman Baths and Pump Rooms, shops and museums; or why not relax and pamper yourself at the Thermae Spa? Golf and horse riding can also be found locally. Village shop ¼ mile.

Spacious living/dining room with vaulted ceiling. Modern fitted kitchen. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. 6 steps up to bedroom area with 5ft four-poster bed. Galleried twin bedroom.
