Find cottages in BridgwaterVisit Bridgwater

Sitting on the edge of the Somerset Levels, with the Mendips to the north and the Quantocks to the west, is the historic market town of Bridgwater.

A trip to the market square gives a sense of the imposing history of the place, with the striking monument of Robert Blake sitting between the historic Corn Exchange and St. Mary's Church. The town centre is a bustling retail area, with plenty of shops to explore and lots of places to eat and drink, and perhaps indulge in some famous Somerset cider.

Bridgwater has a strong political and naval history. The town was the birthplace of Admiral Robert Blake, widely regarded as one of the most important naval commanders in British and Commonwealth history, and was the place where the famous Monmouth rebellions were crushed in the Battle of Sedgemoor.

The history of Admiral Blake can be discovered at the town's Blake Museum, in the house that is believed to have been his birthplace. A rather unusual museum to discover during your stay is the Somerset Brick and Tile Museum, and if the brick and tile museum fires your passion for contemporary building methods, then a visit to the nearby Castle House provides an example of one of the first buildings to extensively use concrete to mimic traditional masonry.

Bridgwater is the perfect base for your cottage holiday in Somerset; explore the beautiful surrounding countryside, Cheddar Gorge or visit the famous Wookey Hole Caves.
